Been trying to research. It seems the processor on this is "OK".
Replacing a broken Dahua NVR.
Would add an SSD, 4GB memory, 2nd ethernet card, Win10, and 2 purple drives (if they fit - already have 1).

Price shipped is just $140.
Dell OptiPlex 7010 (dell refurbished gradeA)
Processor: Intel Core i5 Quad (i5-3570) 3.40 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Hard Drive: 250 GB
OS: Windows 7 Professional
Chassis: Small Form Factor

Not bad, except for the fact that Windows 7 will have no more security updates after January of 2020.

You might want to double that RAM, too.

Besides, if you have ever seen the improvement in performance, especially boot time, after putting Win 7 on a SSD, you should see that on Win 10...blows 7 away.

Thanks guys!
Sorry, I knew better... Should have added cameras...

I have qty5 2MP (starlight) and qty3 3MP (K-series) - all Dahua. Might add a couple more 2MP starlights sometime in the future... Maybe???

Same CPU here. Win 7 on a ssd, 8gb mem, 2 1080 cameras. Cpu running about 6%, 12% with UI3. Might be a bit wimpy with 8+ cams.

Thanks. I just realized I'd be limited with drive space as well.
Looking for something bigger than SFF...

I haven't yet been able to find an answer... Is external storage OK with Blue Iris? Like SSD internally for OS and 1 or 2 purple drive externally for the video?

This seems basic, but I haven't found an answer yet in my googling...

Hi skipdup,

My recommendation:
Look some more, for only a little more I saw some Dell i7-4770 and i7-4790 models. Note - sometimes the i7-4790 ( a better processor ) can be had for less than the i7-4770

Yeah, I'm still obsessing, like an idiot.

I take it this would be silly/overkill/inefficient? (from DellRefurbished)

Not all of the Xeons support QuickSync, which is what BI uses to hardware accelerate h.264 decoding, so def look that model up. In general, Xeons use more power than the i3/5/7 models, so that’s something to factor in too.

OK, I think I'm just going to buy this one off ebay.
Dell Optiplex 9020 MT i7-4790 3.60GHz 8GB DDR3 500GB Win 10 Pro - $280

Should I plan on reinstalling the OS, for security purposes? Anything else I should think about re: buying off ebay (never done it before)?

I really appreciate everyone's help! I'm sure I've made it all more complicated than necessary. :)

That is weaker than an i5 of the same gen and is running win8...crazy overpriced.

Just ordered another ethernet card (for a total of two, one for the camera's network), SSD, and 16 port poe switch.

I'm fairly confident I want the cameras on their own network - replicating what my broken Dahua NVR (NVR5216-16P-4KS2) used to do. Seems more secure that way... making sure the cameras can't reach the internet.

Only thing I haven't found/researched is how to run the "other" network for the cameras. I thought that'd be fairly common, but I haven't been able to find. Anyone know where I could find a write-up/info on that?

Thanks again!

Note that your dahua NVR did not provide the same type of isolation because while the cameras were isolated, the NVR itself was not and it has the same change of being hacked as a camera.
There are several threads discussing how to do it. There are other methods of simply blocking the cameras access to the net.
