The official "WTF" thread

I got a pdf "letter" in an email with this exact scam last night. This was a new one for me.

It's too easy.
Legally go to county revenue/property tax web site and pick an address on the GIS maps, now you have a owner's name to go with an address.
Now surf Google Maps to that address and snap a photo, now you have a picture of the home.
Ta da!

So, I would do this to find out who our neighbors were, or at least know who owned the homes...

Every year before my Home Owner's Insurance renews, I get flooded with mail from insurance agents with a flyer that has a picture of my home, all of the patinate information, such as sq ft, # rooms, appraisal value, etc. There is an insurance premium on this flyer. Of course they are getting this info from the tax assessors web site and Google maps.

Plus the assesed value of the property going a few years back, the taxable value of the property, the history on the property when it was sold and how much your neighbors bought it for, the tax history and how much property tax they paid going way back. Along with any delinquent taxes owed on the property.

Use this website-- find out who your neighbors are. You have to make an account, but it's painless. The site is aimed at people who are trying to purchase farmland, but you can zoom into neighborhoods and see owners of individual houses.

We get so many scam/fake accounts trying to join our neighborhood Facebook page that I check every one against the GIS map before approving them.

You can have Google blur the Street View images. On the Street View of your house look at the bottom for "Report a problem" and click and follow the instructions. If there are multiple years, you'll need to do them individually. Also check the view from different directions/angles, sometimes they're different and you'll need to do those too.

Also if it appears in Zillow and most other real estate sites you can make an account, claim the property, and then delete the pictures.
