This "chip" shortage is frustrating

The auto industry uses old technology chips with old outdated software. They are using old tech to save money, it reduces development time and cost.
The same thing will happen to all companies that do not bring chip development and production in house. If you depend on the Chinese Communist party you are simple an IDIOT.
What till the real electric battery shortage happens.
In reality Ford and GM are old outdated companies that will go out of business as the world shifts to Electric, unless the US government bails them out again. Just like in the computer business, big companies are dying or have died, IBM, digital equipment company (DEC), Compaq.

I was looking to purchase another HP ColorJet Printer, matching one that bought 2 years ago for just under 400.00, now the price is just under $800.00 and there is no inventory, it's backordered on CDW's website.
I needed a couple of more Ubiquti switches, no store has them in stock in my vicinity, will need to stick with TP-Link and Zyxel for now 
Look around. Late last year we found the same thing trying to duplicate a year old Epson printer. I waited a couple of months and found them available at the normal price. But, some retailers had none, others seemed well stocked.

Some of this is due to opportunists who buy up all the stock only to resell via ebay/amazon
My company has limited us to a set of companies to purchase from, however I checked amazon ($650.00) and a few others, including HP's website (650.00) and they are not available. About 3 weeks ago, CDW had the printer listed for $795.00, but they now list it as 650.00 and still not available. Not in a hurry to replace the old HP 5MP with a JetDirect box, as it doesn't get used that much, so may wait until next year.

You should ask your lovely US companies why they produce so much crap which is unrepairable if its broken and why its broken after 2 years.

Same especially goes with iPhones, Apple doesn't need to churn out a new iPhone every year. Every two years is fine, but every year (even less than a year)? If they keep the supply chain consistent, you wouldn't to be fabricating and following new chip design schematics every year

In my opinion apple is somehow special.
On the one hand they support their iphones a guaranteed time which is longer than any other android device. mostly 4-5 years of updates.
You can use them also 4-5 years, if you are happy which the functions... no real problem. sure new is maybe better, but they can be used after 4 years.
BUT...
They offer only 1 year of warranty. They make their products unrepairable. Batterys dies for some after 1-2 years or even shorter time. Repairs are so expensive that you can just buy a new one.
After they paired all parts together its even more ridiculous.
Now you cant even get your data from storage of your macbook/imac/... because its soldered directly onto board.
I sold my 2012 15" macbook pro a few months ago for around 500USD/450EUR.
I used it for around 8,5 years everyday. Never had one issue.

Computers and cars are easily repairable, however, the cost of repair is not economical after a certain point. That is not the fault of the manufacture.
In 1998 an average pc cost 3000. Today you can buy a pc for 199-250. The reason folks kept them longer was because they were much more expensive to purchase and thus cost efficient to repair. Todays pc's are much more reliable and efficient. The reason folks replace them is for performance upgrades generally not a result of failure.
Same with cars, they are cheaper adjusted for inflation and because of the complexity due to safety and comfort innovations it is not cost effective to repair them after a certain point.
I have many desktop pc's running blue iris under decent load for 5-8+ years, no issues.
Samsung provides updates for 4 years.
The reason why you were able to sell you old macbook for 450 even though you cannot install the latest OS is a combo of the average foolish apple buyer who knows less than nothing and your 20% VAT.

Ahh...good times, 128gb Maxtor 5400rpm hard drive for $250 back in the day. I still have a 20gb Maxtor HDD taken out of a Compaq Presario 7000T, scared to even peak at what's inside,

How about $10k for a 4k (16-bit words) memory board in 1973? I was 20-something working for Texas Instruments. I was riding the New York subway with one for a customer delivery, scared to death I'd get mugged to steal it. This was I believe the very first production model of a semiconductor memory board. Totally hot stuff at the time.

No, no, no... That pic wasn't mine, it's long gone. I just found a pic of it on the net to show what I had. 
Lets see, around here I have:
- An original IBM PC with original monitor and external, thrid party hard drive, probably 10 or 20 MB. Yes, MB, for you youngsters!
- Epson dot matrix printer
- A modem or two - external, of course.
- Calculators....HP45, I think a TI scientific from the same era.
