Unfortunately, I did not serve either and consider that to be among the biggest failures of my life. I'm a sci-fi fan, more traditional sci fi, and one of my favorite books is "Starship Troopers" by Heinlein, it wa made into a grade "C" movie that included some T&A and shows up on cable channels every now and then. One of the big parts of the plot in the book, and mentioned in the movie, is that no one who hasn't served can vote. Service and voting are highly regarded.
Israel has a similar policy. Everyone, male and female (pardon the political incorrectness with sexual identities) has to serve and is on reserve once their "formal" service is over. They actually get to take their "weapons of war" home with them, with ammo, so they are prepared in case of an emergency. I think that an arrangement like that, that also includes the right to vote, would put a very quick end to all the "America was never great" thinking that's going on and go a very long way to replace the total lack of civics education that exists in today's educational system.
