What EliteDesk for BI?

@fenderman I happened to notice that you were suggesting to CaliGirl to get an i7 if she was going to be regularly remoting in via Mac and some mention of more RAM up to 16gig. I'm assuming that the i5 suggestion is because it works well for most of us with just 8GB of memory and that it's more readily available and as such the price is lower, down to $185 if you go by the name Fenderman. :)

Regarding memory on the EliteDesk. If I buy a unit with a single stick of 8GB (presumably originally installed by HP) can I add a second 8GB stick from another provider (likely a different brand) to get 16GB? This second stick will likely not be the exact same part number but the general specs would be the same, would this work? I'm concerned that I would not be able to use the lone 8GB stick in this situation.

Processor needs vary by load.... Also i7 is a meaningless term... There are five that are more powerful than i7...
While it's generally recommended to have matching memory sticks, you'll be fine simply adding another stick....

Thanks.... BTW: I thought that the i7 generally had more computational power and hyper-threading and cache size than the i5 in the same processor generation family. Coming from the Mac world many of the previous i5 systems seem to be dual core and the only way to get quad core was to have an i7 so the i7 really meant something amongst Mac users. But isn't an i7 of the same generation faster than a i5? What could I have said to make i7 meaningful?

Thanks,

Robert

first, simply saying i7 doesnt indicate the generation. Second, even within the same generation, for example there are U processors that are used in small form factor and NUC machines that are significantly weaker or T processors with much lower clock speeds...so the exact model is important.

Kinda annoyed but whatever...ended up buying an Optiplex for $220 8gb, 128sd, no OS. Been looking for a few weeks and haven't seen any deals or offers accepted near $180-$190.

it likely has the OS licence, simply install with windows media creation tool.

Also check Facebook market. I just found a HP Elitedesk 800 G3 i5-7500 256 SSD for $250. Almost new condition and still with 2 yrs of manufacturer warranty.

Wow, I'd like to find something sweet like that.... are you going to purchase that one? I'll take a look at my local FB market--good idea. I have a craigslist alert setup but I never see ANY EliteDesk computers for sale--ever,

Thanks,

Robert

I just bought it... sweet deal! It took me a while looking around. I was looking for Optiplex but changed my mind due to space. I looked everywhere... Amazon, E-bay, OfferUp, letgo but finally found it in Facebook.

Keep looking. It took me few weeks.

If you go to the support section of the Dell web site and enter the machine's Service Tag or Express Service Code it should allow you to view the original configuration which will include which OS the machine shipped with, and any additional licenses attached to it.

Can anyone confirm if you can install a second 3.5" media drive in the G3 without any fuss on the SFF form factor?

Thanks,

Robert

Ok. I opened the case and this lady is capable of holding (2) 3.5" and (1) 2.5" drives. Mine brought a 256 M2 SSD. The installation of the WD Purple drive will have to wait since I have no mounting screws nor the short SATA cable. :( While I get that stuff I will be ordering my cams from Andy. Hope I get them before the Holidays.

I'd like to add in here I purchase HP Compaq SSF PCs for my installs. They are capable of holding (2) 3.5" drives.

Can scoop up refurbished ones on Ebay with OS and i5-3570 which is capable of running at least (8) 4mp cameras @ 15fps for around $130-150

Can find them with 3rd gen i7's for around $200.

So, to add two 3.5 drives what exactly do you need for the install? Just a sata cable for each drive and screws? I was thinking that the cables would already in place.

Thanks,

Robert

Two 3.5” drives and an SSD too?

What’s needed to install these three drives?

Thanks.

Thanks for the pics, it looks like one exposed drive and one under the optical bay... good to know you have this ability on older than G3 HPs.
