While still struggling with a VM test setup, I am also searching for an affordable dedicated PC. My current intention is to hook up about 8 camera's eventually. I yet have to figure out which ones though. Also, since forum members have warned me one might get addicted, those 8 initial camera's may expand over time.

Today I ran into an offer of a refurbished PC with specs that might do the trick. But because I don't see the processor in the one of the lists Best, Great or Good performance on page Choosing Hardware for Blue Iris, I'm somewhat hesitant, These are the specs:
  • HP Z230 Workstation
  • Intel i7-4770 3.40Ghz
  • 16GB DDR3
  • 256GB SSD
  • Quadro K2000 2GB
  • Win 10 Pro
I intend to add a WD Purple to it myself.

Will such a configuration be sufficient?

Hi @pjdevries

I would not get any used PC with a CPU older than a 6th gen now... so I'd look for a i7-6xxxx as a minimum.

will the PC work depend on the cameras. If there are 8 cameras at 8MP recording at h.265 then NO.
But if there are 8 cameras recording at 2 MP at H.264 using substreams for motion then YES.

I run a i7-4790 with 13 cameras most of then are at 2MP and there are no 8MP, with substreams.

BUT if i were buying a replacement PC i would use at least a i7-6xxxx or better. Use full desk top CPU, no nuc, no laptop cpus. Remember the cpu runs 24/7/365.

I have decided to put together a new, budget friendly system by myself. In the end the difference was only about 90 euro's because I have a used 250Gb SSD on the shelf. This is what it would look like:
  • Asrock B365M Pro4 (Micro ATX)
  • Intel Core i7-9700 3GHz
  • Kingston HyperX DDR4, 16GB, 2666 Mhz
  • Samsung 850 EVO SSD 256GB
  • WD Purple 8TB
Is that better?

nice system build. High end with a i7-9700. Make sure you have good cooling. remember running 24/7/365
