Is there a general consensus for the most stable OS to run BI on? Machine would be dedicated to BI only. Win10 or Win8?

I've been running BI on 64-bit Windows 10 Pro with Intel Core i5 3470 (3.20 GHz), 8GB ram for a good while. I only have 3 cameras running and the BI utilization hovers around 32%.

I have some machines on window 7 and some on windows 10. I personally don't see a difference between the 2. I have a system on win 7 for 2 years now that's never crashed. I just recommend turning off windows update because that can be a huge resource hog when it starts.

Only thing I noticed on win 10 is my chrome remote desktop mouse is hidden till I move something on the screen. Weird glitch/bug

I do this to every new Windows 10 PC or laptop I set up for people:

"Speeding Up Windows 10"
From Windows 10 High CPU Usage Fixes

"Method 1
Launch settings and go to Update > Advanced. Here, you must disable P2P
sharing, as it’s believed that, in some cases, your CPU usage could
skyrocket because this process runs in the background. Simply click the
“choose how updates are delivered” option and toggle “updates from more than
one place” to off to make sure no process runs in the background to
distribute updates to other users in your network or across the web.

Method 2
Additionally, it appears that, in some cases, the notification system is at
fault for the high CPU usage, and some users recommend disabling the Windows
10 tips from the very beginning to avoid this. To do this, go to Settings >
System > Notifications & Actions and simply uncheck the box that says “Show
me tips about Windows.” If you’re already familiar with Windows 10, you
should have no problem at all. Disabling Windows 10 Tips could help too.

Method 3
If your Windows 10 version already has support for Windows Spotlight, there
are some recommendations to disable it. Once again, background services are
believed to be at fault for what’s happening with the CPU, so the high usage
could be the result of the services running in the background. To do this,
go to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and change Windows Spotlight
to Picture. If you have Windows Spotlight, just switch to Picture to avoid
the problem."

Which OS version started to allow you to run services with hardware acceleration?
Not sure if I understand your question worded "....started to allow you to run services".

Not trying to be a smartass, just asking for clarification. :blankstare:

I think he means which OS after 7 lets you run as a service and hardware acceleration...
I never ran BI on 8 so I dont know, but he might as well upgrade to 10.

He's talking about running Blue Iris as a service. On Windows 7 it apparently does not allow hardware acceleration if you run Blue Iris as a service.

In windows 10 you can run BI as a service and HA works

Edit: @fenderman beat me to it

Super useful, thanks. While we're at it, can anybody recommend a good guide to cleaning out bloatware that might be on whatever system I have? I've been almost exclusively Unix/Mac for the last decade or more so going to have to re-educate myself on how to run a clean Windows system.

Dont....always, and i mean always, do a complete clean install...once windows 10 is activated on a pc, you never need a key....download the microsoft media creation tool, direct from microsoft and create a w10 bootable usb....easy as pie.
