I just upgraded 2 of my Customers NVR's and both NVR's had two usb ports, doing it directly through the nvr would NOT work. I called my usa reseller and he said to try it through the web gui and it worked...go figure. The issue I was having was if I had a camera set on motion, it would stop recording all together if the nvr rebooted.
I've got a NVR with two USB ports too and hadn't any problems upgrading directly from USB stick.

I was planning on upgrading from the NVR menu itself and not from the web interface. Is it OK to do so directly from the NVR?

I really only access the NVR from the NVR itself (and not Smart PSS or anything like that)
That's the way I use mine also.I have a mouse connected to the back usb port, so I put the usb stick with the bin file in the front port and it upgraded fine.

Back USB port??? I took a look at my 5216 and, doh, there's a USB port on the back. It's a half inch from the alarm connectors that I connected a bunch of wires to, and never noticed it. Tunnel vision at its very best!

I use the back USB port for backup, because it's USB 3.0, on the front is a receiver for a wireless mouse.

yeah, never understood this surely usb3 on front would be better for achieving data to usb stick for police etc.

You can't reach mine without dismounting a lot of stuff, to hide and protect it. So there's a USB 3.0 extension cable on the back, going to a location I could easily attach a stick

yah, just saying Imo it would make more sense to have USB2 at back for Mouse/etc.

Here are the time/date settings in my NVR and cameras and I don't notice any issues using this setting. I am in US central time (CST)

I don't have NTP setup on my NVR or any of my cameras... right now they are just maintained by the system time (on the top of the page).

My times are not staying up to date with the actual time (they are actually a minute or 2 faster than the actual time so I would like to be able to use NTP to maintain the right times.

I assume this feature won't work if my NVR or cameras can't access the internet?

Correct. NTP is internet based.

That said, if the reason why you are not allowing your system to access the internet is for security purposes and you really need you system sync'ed on time you can put into place a firewall blocking all but the ntp traffic to the NVR.

If your a Windows/Bi user run this tool on the network: NetTime - Network Time Synchronization Tool

configure it to allow other machines to request time, open your windows firewall to allow 123/udp and then give your cameras the local IP of that windows box as the NTP source.

If your a linux user you should already be capable of doing this with ntpd without my help.

Perhaps another option? I set up my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter to act as the NTP time server, and it works fine. I used the "~WAN to 2LAN2" setup wizard for 2 separate subnets, which by default allows established/related connections between the subnet the cameras reside on and my secure subnet.

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to post but im having difficulty saving a clip from this nvr on smartpss 2 on PC. I can select the clip and export it in a .mp4 or .avi format but when i go to play it all it shows is a black screen. The recording plays and is the correct length and all but it has not sound and no picture, just a black screen. Anyone know how I can get a clip off the NVR without physically accessing it? thanks.

How are you selecting mp4 or avi? When I export from smartPss, the format is .asf.

I go to the playback tab, cut a clip using the button on the bottom left. A window pulls up asking to select location to store file and file type. I can select .mp4 and .avi among some other ones. I can't get to my computer now to get some pics..

Do you use the actual SmartPSS? I didn't have any doubts with this. I exported some clips two days ago as MP4. Even the Windows media player could play them flawlessly.

User error/tunnel vision (again). I never noticed the arrow for the file format indicating a pull-down box. Thanks for the help.

Yeah. That's the screen I used. However, when I export in MP4 or avi they won't play. May be just me though. If you export in ASF, what did you use play the file?

All these different video formats and codecs are a big pain the the rear. What I did originally was go to the web interface to export the video, which is in .dav format. I then found that Armcrest Smart Player will play it. It might play the other formats, too, but it has bugs with selecting files and I'm not wasting any more time on it. I tried the different smartPss formats with the following results:

.asf - Windows 7 media player gives an error.
.avi - Media player acts like it's playing it but there's no video.
.mp4 - same as .avi.
.dav - (aka "original format") smartPss offers to export a version of the Armcrest player along with the video clip.

Yeah that's basically what I've found too. Except I can't even install armcrest smart player. It gives me an error. Great
