I have no dog in this fight because I run an NVR. If you find something better than BI I'm sure there are a lot of people here who would like to know about it. There haven't been any better alternatives suggested because nobody knows of one. My own input is that if 100% cpu usage overheats a system, there's something seriously wrong with that system. I'm assuming you've used Task Manager to determine that BI is the cause of the high CPU usage, you're not thrashing the swap file, and anything else that could be suspicious.

Yes nejakenick, reading through some threads, it appears this forum has fallen to "group mind" and resistant to any other options or opinions. It is sad they can never accept something better because they've already determined the "best" and nothing could ever change that.
He runs bi himself....
No one said its the BEST...if you read the threads here you will find that there are MUCH better vms options out there, but they come at a PER camera license price 50-150 PER CAMERA...you want to pay that? And blue iris has some features none of them have...Think about it instead of running your mouth, there IS A REASON why the folks here rave about blue iris...dont like it find something else and post about it...
You are just a fool and purchased a system first then though about what you will run on it...bad move.
As tiger mentioned, you likely improperly build your system with insufficient cooling or improperly applied your thermal paste...
Best solution for you is to hire a professional as it does not appear that you are competent to pull off this project.

I am planning a new 14 camera system for my home. Blue Iris at $ 60 is peanuts compared to all the others costs.
Current system with 4 cameras with NVR which my wife has to sit for several hours to find out which cat used the garden as toilet stop so that she can capture the video on her mobile phone to sent to the owner of the cat.
The quality of night video was so bad such that the owner of the cat refused to accept until my wife was able to captured the same cat in daylight using the garden as toilet stop with her mobile phone.
I have Synology NAS and was considering to use Synology Surveillance Station. But the price for 14 cameras Surveillance Station licenses at $50 for 12 licenses (2 license comes with the NAS) makes Blue Iris the obvious choice. Most important, I know that the starlight cameras I am going to buy from Andy works with BI (reviewed, tested and installed by many in this forums).
I am going to use BI ($60 is nothing compared to all other costs) because it is going to help my wife to identify the culprit cat without sitting for hours .....

I have 15 cameras 2mp to 4mp at this moment on a 7 year old I7-2600s (s being the slower lower power processor). Currently sitting at 25%. About half the cameras are 10 to 15 FPS and the rest are 5 to 6 FPS.

I followed the recommendations for "Optimizing Blue Iris's CPU Usage" and brought my utilization down from 80%+ to between 16 and 63%, although I did turn on a second camera to record 24/7 while working on this. The server is just a cheap i3 machine I bought a few years ago so if I add another camera or two I will likely need to get a better machine but I'm more comfortable with the CPU where it is now than when it never dropped below 80%. Thanks.

When I paid $50 for my used I7-2600s to upgrade my i5-2500s last years my cpu more than halved...way more than the cpu benchmarks would suggest between those two processors.

For those on older machines with the lower end cpu options spending a little money to upgrade to the next level or two might be worth it.

Of course it halved, i7 has virtual cores, but that means nothing.

I am not talking about virtualization, but about hyper-threading. OS has no way of determining the real CPU usage, it thinks that you have 2x more cores, but what you have is 2x more logical cores/threads, which does not mean 2x better performance - it is more like 20% better.

20% better is what I expected based on the benchmark numbers. My point is I ended up getting far better than that of which I have no explanation.

I just gave you the explanation. CPU usage number is a lie.

After reading many posts about the CPU issue because our system of 23 cameras kept maxing out after 24 hours I found what I thought to be an odd fix. We use all Amcrest camera's and I installed them with default settings. I happened to watch an install video by Amcrest for Blue Iris thinking what could it hurt. Their video showed using a different port for the camera vs the default. When I stopped using the RTSP port and used the TCP port, my CPU dropped and has stayed below 25% for 3 solid days.

I had to do this for each camera manually, but it appears to be helping in a big way. It's possible this just fixed something I did wrong initially, but if others have a similar issue it's worth trying.
