getting a dedicated box to run BI so I can get the load off my desktop PC.

have 5 RLC-410-5MP cams, which are running 2560x1920 15 fps... current system is a core i5-3570k, been my desktop for 8-10 years now. 16gb ram, 512GB SSD, 2 x 3TB HDs, backup to a NAS with 4x8TB raidz (21TB usable space).

new box I ordered is a HP Elite 800 G2 Mini, has core i7-6700, 16GB, 256GB M.2 SSD, and I'll be adding a 3GB HD to it, box comes with win10 'refurb' license.

My question: Is 16GB sufficient for a dedicated system that will mostly be running headless, and accessed either via web:81, or via RDP for config/management ?

Yes.
Be sure to optimize BI according to ==>> Optimizing Blue Iris' CPU Usage

Also, I take it that you had the Reolinks before you joined IPCamTalk 2 days ago and before you hand a chance to read up on them here? They don't play nice with Blue Iris. :idk:

yeah, I've got all that setup, direct recording, yada yada. when I migrate it to a dedicated box i'll probably revert to monitoring at the 15FPS the cameras are at, as the 7 FPS I have it running at now per that wiki is just too jerky.

re; reolink, yes, I got them and had blueiris up and running before I found this forum. they seem to be working fine, once I updated the firmware on them, and configured BI properly.

Amcrest, while not an ideal MP/sensor combination, offers cameras in that range that at least allows you to set parameters like shutter speed and the camera actually adhere to your settings instead of the Reolinks that decide to override user inputted settings if the firmware decides that the picture isn't bright enough...

The problem with the reo's is because they will override the manual settings, you cannot stop the video to get a clean capture with facial details that are of any use to the police. You can tell them what time something happened, but not much to IDENTIFY the perp.

so to save a few dollars you are going to let a bad guy get away ? Why waste your money on a surveillance system if it does not work ?

==========================================
Read Study Plan before spending money
Cameras are for surveillance to get information for after the fact. Cameras are NOT a deterrent.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) Start with a good variable focus camera, so you test for the correct lens, lighting, camera placement.
4) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
5) Do not use wifi cameras.
6) Do not use cloud storage
7) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
8) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
9) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
10) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo, Vivint cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
11) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
12) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
13) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
14) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 7ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
15) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
16) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator
17) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List
18) Camera Sensor size, bigger is general better Sensor Size Chart
19) Camera lens size, a bigger number give more range but less field of view. Which Security Camera Lens Size Should I Buy?
20) verify your camera placement, have a friend wearing a hoodie, ball cap and sunglasses looking down approach the house, can you identify them at night ?
21) DO NOT UPGRADE your NVR or camera unless you absolutely have a problem that needs to be fixed and known what you are doing, if you do you will turn it into a brick !!
22) Absolutely no camera traffic pass thru the main home router during normal operations.

lived here 25 years, haven't had any crimes on my property. these cameras are, as much as anything else, so I can tell when the amazon guy shows up, and watch the field next to my house for wildlife

although I did catch this one of a stranger riding his bicycle around my driveway...

and when I posted it on the local forum, my neighbor 2 doors down saw the same guy on his Ring, and /another/ neighbor was in theirr driveway, and saw him come out of mine, ride inand out of the other guys, then go back down the hill towards town. strange and suspicious.

and yes, if I knew that guy, I'd recognize him, but I would not expect to identify him from this overlook. that camera is mounted up on my chimney with a wide view of the main part of the driveway/parking.

frankly, these cams are performing good enough for me. when I get the Elite 800g2 core i7-6700 mini box to setup as a NVR, I will have about $700 total in the whole setup, 5 cameras, 2 4 port PoE switches (in differnet spots), and the NVR. I could have bought a Lorax at Costco :p

edit: ps, before I tried Blue Iris (with the first Reolink I bought as a test), I ran through several open source 'nix based NVRs, and gave up on them all when I tried Blue Iris.

the cameras recommended by you guys seem to be $200 each, so my 5 cams would have been about $1000, plus $300 for the HP NVR plus another $100 for the long outdoor ethernet cables and 2 cheap PoE hubs.

Yes. 16 Gb should be plenty for what your doing. Blue Iris is using about 8-12% of my CPu and 1-1.5 Gb of ram with 15 cameras. on a HP Elitedesk 800 G4 SFF i-5 8500.

yeah, thats what I was gathering, reading the wiki bibles.

Just now, I ordered a pair of Hikvision T24F2 turret cams to play with. they were cheaper than I expected.

From my testing, my BI system was not happy with only 8Gb of ram, 12Gb seemed perfect and increasing to 16gb made no or negligible difference but I run with 16Gb to get the benefit of running dual memory.

sounds good. this HP mini PC is coming with 2 x 8GB dimms, it only has the two slots, so, there's zero point in replacing it with 2x16GB
