Best Low Light cameras- POE-suggestions?

Hello,
TO start im not sure if this is the right sub forum, so if not sorry, please move
Anyway i live in the suburbs where there is almost zero light at night time.

I had a lorex system that i "temporary" installed 4 years ago, but never got around to fixing everything.

What do you think the best POE camera is for low light, i was thinking the starlight cameras, but im open to any brand
(Already have POE switches)

any input is appreciated

Welcome to a great forum, been around for over a year, great resource. Check out the https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/ip-cam-talk-cliff-notes .

There are Dahua cams that are good with low light areas, like the Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-Z (which I have), IPC-HDW5231R-ZE and there is a cheaper version, without a sub-stream (can't remember the number) and Andy here is a good source to purchase from (EmpireTech Andy).

Also, there are Hikvision Darkfigher cams, check out IPCT Cams & NVR's.

x2 on the post above. When it comes to brands, Dahua and Hikvision are pro-grade brands and seem to get low-light tech in their cameras first. By the time the tech filters down to consumer brands (Amcrest, Lorex, Ring, Arlo, etc), Dahua and Hikvision are on to something new. Some tech (like Sony's awesome 2MP 1/2.8" image sensor) hasn't filtered down, even after several years.

Definitely check out the Cliff Notes guide that @concord linked to, and spend a little time in the Dahua subforum here. It's full of owners who are always willing to share info and help out. Not saying that the Hikvision forum here doesn't have great folks doing the same, it's just that the Dahua forum is usually a lot more active.

I'm curious to know if there's a better cam than 5231, cost aside to a point. Like is there a dearer yet better camera & if so which one(s)? Is there a hierarchy list somewhere?
 
If there is, it hasn’t hit my radar yet. Now, if price is no object, there are some spectacular (and quite large) PTZ cameras but they’re better suited to commercial users and seriously they’re quite imposing.

For Dahua OEM international models:

8xxx > 5xxx > 4xxx > 2xxx > 1xxx

I meant specifically for low light, as 5231 seems to be all the rage because of this yes.

Yes, the models are closer than what you used to see in the 2xxx vs 5xxx range - still the 5xxx model has more processing power / ability. We are seeing more features which the 1xxx / 2xxx series did not have previously now being brought to those model ranges from what we have more often seen in the 4xxx / 5xxx series. This is the progression of technology..

Look at the IPC-HFW8232E-Z, I can personally confirm it does better than the 5231 in low light. Sensor size matters.

If you have cash burning hole in your pocket, the DH-IPC-HF8835FN would also be a step up from there. I don't have one of these, but they were reviewed on this site.

I this it is one of the best if not THE best
