That is a very low load...You can easily do on on a i5 haswell..even i3...you can get an i5-4590 optiplex via the outlet or elitedesk (hp) via ebay for 300 all the time..$459, but I think that's just a regular price.
Actually, if you were just doing 4 1080p 2.1 MP cameras, what would you buy?
They have a sale twice a month you need to follow the Twitter feedRight now at the Outlet there's not an i5-4590/8 GB memory system to be had under $529, but no coupons are available (at 5/30/2016 at 1:01 AM)...but there will be later.
An i7 skylake would handle it with ease.I've been playing with my Top201 cameras on a AMD 3800+ X2 with 4GB of ram. Wasn't terrible. I added two new 2MP CIMPs to it and it crashed my system...
Im ready to buy a dedicated machine for this. What specs to I need to run eight 4MP cameras at full specs? Can a Skylake i7 handle this with room to grow on BlueIris?
There is something wrong. Have you set the recording to direct to disk? hardware acceleration? So my BI setup on a dedicated PC is at 99-100% load and crashing, am I overloading my specs?
1 Hikvision 4MP Dome 20fps (two instances - one for continuous recording, one for motion alerts/clips)
1 Hikvision 3MP Bullet 20fps (two instances - one for continuous recording, one for motion alerts/clips)
1 Dahua 3MP Mini-Bullet 20fps (motion alerts/clips)
they are all at their highest resolution, varies per camera.
Here are my Dell specs:
Windows 10 Home Edition
Intel Core i5-4460 @ 3.20GHz
(Intel HD Graphics 4600)
16MB RAM
1TB local HDD for db and New storage
Recording to 4TB surveillance HDD for Alerts and Stored
Camera properties >record>file formatWhat is "direct to disk"?
See post above. Duplicate cameras use little additional resources particularly if they are hidden. Direct to disk is not active in demo mode.Could you explain direct to disk? I think I have it configured that way but maybe I do not, for instance both HDDs I'm using are internal SATA drives (1TB 7200rpm/4TB WD Purple). I will say that I was just administrating the BI configuration remotely from a remote desktop application so that actually may have spiked the hardware utilization a good bit.
When you have duplicates of the same camera how much additional demand on the system are you creating?
I have tons of storage space so I'd like to record continuously, but I also want to have alerts with small (sharable) clips for motion events. Is it most efficient to set it up as I have with two duplicates with one continuous and the other motion trigger/alert based?
==================I'm assuming this would be a better system being 6th gen Skylake and all:
Inspiron 3650 Mini Tower Desktop
$459
- Processor: Intel Core 6th Generation i5-6400 Processor (Quad Core, up to 3.3GHz, 6M Cache, 65W)
- Windows 10 Home 64bit English
- 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
- 12 GB DDR3L Dual Channel 1600MHz (8GBx1 + 4GBx1)
- 8X DVD +/- RW Drive
- Integrated Video Card
- Silver
- Dell Outlet Inspiron 3650 Mini Tower Desktop
Are you recording direct to disk and using hardware acceleration? 30 percent is high for that load.==================
Here's what I finally wound up with:
Dell Optiplex 740 Micro
I appreciate the help and advice I've received.
- Processor: Intel Core 6th Generation i7-6700T Skylake Processor (Quad Core, 8MB, 8T, 2.8GHz, 35W)
- Windows 10 Pro
- 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
- 8GB (1x8G) 2133MHz DDR4 Memory Non ECC
- Intel Integrated Graphics
- Dell Outlet Optiplex 7040 Micro Tower
- Intel Wireless 8260 (802.11ac) + Bluetooth 4.1,
- Everything is running smoothly, with the CPU usually in the 20-30% range with just four IP 1080p cameras. I'm running BI4, and using a 55" 4k TV for a monitor.

There is also a hardware acceleration option. See help file and release notes. Are you running the licensed version of BI or demo? What frame rates are you recording at?I did check the direct-to-disk boxes. Is there anything else I should do?
