Hello all,
I'm new to the site so please excuse me if I ask anything that has already been answered in an older post.
I am about to upgrade a surveillance system at a friend of mine's business. He currently has a Samsung 16 cam analog system. I am adding 8 5MP ip cams and will ultimately be swapping out the 16 analog cams with MP cams and a couple of PTZ cams over time. What I plan to do is use a dedicated PC as the NVR, use BI to combine all analog & ip cams into 1 UI, and set up remote viewing so he can view from home & smartphone. The cams will be running 24/7, and non stop recording for at least 16 hours a day.
What I was wondering is if it would be best to use server hardware (Dell PowerEdge), a workstation (Dell Precision T3400/T3500), or just a desktop PC (Dell Inspiron 3847)?
The reason I listed those examples is because I'm working on a "somewhat" of a limited budget, and I was able to locate some used equipment. The equipment is as follows:
$200 Dell PowerEdge 2950- 2x Quad Core Xenon Processor X5470 2x6MB Cache, 3.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 32GB Ram **NO HD**
$300 Dell Inspiron 3847- I5 4440 Quad Core processor, 12GB Ram (upgradable to 16GB), WD Blue 1TB HD
$200 Dell Precision T3500- Quad Core Xenon Processor E5630, 2.53 GHz, 4GB Ram (max 24GB)
HDs will be swapped over to 4TB WD Purple, & Probably SSD for OS. I haven't decided if I want to run win server, win7, win7 embedded (to strip it down), or win10, but I do know the ONLY program I'll be running is BI. The OS isn't a problem so my only concern is getting the right hardware, and as you can see, my budget isn't the best.
Any advice would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.
