Dahua NVR 5216-16P-4KS2

This NVR with the firmware you linked, supports only the first substream of the cams, right?

yeah, if you want to record the 2nd sub-stream its best to just add it as a custom RTSP Stream... but then you wont have any IVS/MD

What made you upgrade to this pro version from your lite version?
And in your first post, the only actual benefit I see you point out is that its quicker navigating through the web interface. Besides the fact that Andy doesn't appear to have the 4216 (lite) in his on line store so I'd have to go with another seller, the price would be around $225 from what I see. An extra $50 to get a faster system (and more than 50% more incoming bandwith available)? Is that what you're saying?

Also, I'm currently recording to a NAS with my two 5321 starlights, but in a few weeks I hope to order 2 more cameras. At that point I'll exceed the capabilities of the NAS and if I want to record everything (which I do) I'll need a real NVR. I'd really like to go with the Dahua NRV, either the 4216 or the 5216 (realistically the 5216 because Andy sells it and it's only $50 more.) But I'm hoping someone with experience can help answer a few questions for me.

1) I use Linux Mint. Will there be any issues with this? And what is the correct software to download and access the NVR? It seems like DSS/SmartPSS won't work in Linux. Am I stuck with using the web interface? I didn't realize that I wouldn't be able to access all of the features on my new cameras unless I was in a Window's computer (couldn't download the plug in for Linux). Luckily I have a Window's 10 VM on my NAS already that I was able to play around with the IVS features, but without a Dahua NVR I don't think those are going to do anything for me until I get the NVR....@nayr says he uses the IVS to push notifications to his phone, but that brings me to point 2...

2) The Android mobile app that is paired with Dahua IP cameras/this NVR is gDMSS, correct? I have the free version on my phone now and it seems pretty boring. Mostly I can just see the sub streams. I'm guessing that with the Dahua NVR the app would be able to do more, but even now when I close the app I have to re-add my live streams when I open it back up. Is that because I have the lite version of the app? I don't even see anywhere on the app to link it to the NVR.

3) I've got two cheap cameras, one is a Sricam P2P and the other is a Hosafe ONVIF. The Hosafe I believe should be able to connect to the Dahua NVR and record no problem. I'm assuming the Sricam P2P will not though.

I'd really like to find a way to get IVS notifications without the Dahua NVR as that would buy me some time before dropping another $700 on a 5216 NVR + two more 5231 cams + WD Purple....but maybe the answer to my questions is just "but the Dahua NVR and everything will work". I'm just trying to get everything I have already working before I "upgrade" to a real NVR.

Thanks for any suggestions.

1. Hate to break it to you but its gonna suck from linux, you'll be better off running a dedicated monitor for the NVR.. The Chrome App might work basically, havent tried it from a Linux Desktop.
2. This is because its designed for mobile connections, you think thats the behavior you want until you get more cameras and you open an app and it tries to load 10 cameras over a network connection thats not capable of it.. You can group cameras to load up quicker, or use push notifications to just autoload the camera that was triggered when you click on it.. Almost nobody wants to view main streams on a mobile, but its entirely possible.. just not likely doable remotely unless you have some fiberoptic internet at home.
3. If you can get RTSP streams that'll play in VLC the NVR should be capable of recording em.

When I got my 4216-4k there was no 5216-4KS2, a friend recently wanted a cheap NVR so I gave him a deal on my old one and upgraded for a minimal fee.. I think its worth the extra $50, easily.

Well that sucks. My wife uses Window's 10, so maybe I'll just access it from her laptop when I need to. Or worst case dual boot linux/Windows. I've held off on that for almost a year now using exclusively Linux. (The VM on my NAS is slower than dog shit anyway)

I'm fine with the mobile app only seeing the sub streams as opposed to the main streams, that's not what I meant. I guess I meant I wasn't all that thrilled with the gDMSS app so far. Since I got my feet wet with the Sricam/Hosafe shit cams (less than $50 between the two of them) about 8 months ago, I've been pretty content with just viewing the live streams on Tinycam. That app is the shit. I love it. It's the only thing I've found that can view the P2P Sricam camera and when I open it up boom there's all my streams playing live.

Honestly I'd be more than happy just using Tinycam to view the live streams, and having the cameras themselves notify me of tripwire movement.

The only thing I need/want from the NVR is dedicated recording (to unload it from my NAS which can only record 2 streams anyway) and something to flag IVS notifications from the cameras and push notifications to my phone. That last point will probably stop me from checking the live feed from tinycam 1,000x a day haha.

Can I get the 5321 starlight camera's themselves to sent IVS notifications to the app? I'm not seeing that option anywhere...

you need the plus (paid) version for push notifications; and the cameras need local recording.

Ok, I kinda figured I might need the paid version. But wait, by local recording, do you mean the Dahua NVR? Or the cameras NEED an SD card?

for the camera to send video it has to have a place to store it, so either, or both.

Is there a manual anywhere for the 5216-4KS2 nvr? I'm trying to learn how to set recordings and view them.

Thanks

Just skimming thru the manual I noticed something.

On the the front of my NVR I see the Status light is blue. I looked in the manual and it says "The blue light is on when the device is malfunction."

What does this mean exactly?

I just have 1 light. How many hard drives do you have installed? If only 1 maybe that's the cause.

These are generic chassis dahua uses across alot of models for a long time, its very likely as the components inside have evolved the underlying uses for the LED's may have changed.. docs are not perfect, if it works who cares..

It seems to work however (And I feel stupid asking this) but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to playback recorded footage. I have tried everything that I can think of... it was already set to continuous record (by default) and I see a solid green line for the camera per the times. When I try to click play or choose a specific time to start the playback nothing happens.

Any ideas?
