Does the HDD make any difference?

Building a system for blue iris.

My options for storage are buy 3 WD purple 1tb drives for $150, or I can put 3 SSDs I already own in raid 1 to have 700GB. I'm leaning towards the free option because the build is costing me $1200 and thats not even including the 4 cameras I have to buy and the poe switch.

Does the storage medium really matter?

you are not making a proper comparison...
1tb purple red will only cost you 50...vs 700gb for free...
How much storage do you need..

The comparison is free vs not free.
Is it worth buying an hdd thats branded for cctv systems or do I get the same effect by using a ssd

yes but its not 150 vs free.
you could get better performance with an ssd depending on the model, but you will only have 700gb of storage...that may be enough for 1 day or one month depending on your system or settings.
SSD's also have a finite write...some very high..again depending on your load this may or may not work..

Building a 16 core / 32 thread server. 500GB samsung 850 evo for boot drive + VM virtual disk storage. Buying four 5MP cameras. Using blue iris to record motion detection.

16 core server for 4x5mp cams? Makes no sense..will run on a 300 dollar i5-6500 system with lots of room to spare.
Also note the most 5mp cameras will be terrible in low light and at night..start reading the dahua starlight turret thread.

Its an esxi server. One for blue iris. One for pfsense. One for plex. One for a DNS server.

blue iris or any vms should run on a dedicated pc...regardless, pfsense and dns server produce negligible loads...you dont need that space heater..

It peaks at 320 watts. Im not going to be at 100% cpu usage 24/7. You said it yourself pfsense and a dns server have a negligible impact. Four cameras on low sensitivity motion detection aren't going to keep it at 100% either. The highest it will go is like 40%. Thats less than my gaming PC.

have you actually tested the power consumption? even at 40% if the consumption is high you could easily be spending 400-600 a year on power..you are not running your gaming pc 24/7

I do leave my PC on 24/7 because its hosting my DNS server. The build may be expensive and overkill, but it isnt going to cost me any more per month than I pay now by having a pfsense machine, a gaming pc, and a plex server running on three different machines. Its not a production server its not going to be throttled 24 7. At least 90% of the time it will be idled.

the amount you pay now is irrelevant you could be saving 400 a year by buying an i7-6700 system for 400-500 dollars..

I dont know where you live but for me its 9.5 cents per kwh. Even if its at 100% usage 24 7, thats 269.81 per year...
I cant save 400 a year if its only costing me 270 a year... And thats at max usage, which is extremely unrealistic.. The realistic usage would be probably 35% of the max usage, which is only 113.75W. Which costs me $94 per year.... Lets say that an i5 machine is so efficient that it is only 20% of the consumption of my machine. 22W. That would cost me $19 per year. An i5 machine with unrealistic efficiency would save me $85. Not 400.... And to be even more realistic with 60% consumption, an i5 machine would save me $24 per year...
