I agree that's terrible workmanship...You never put a fastener in wood so close to the end of the board, or you'll get a split just like this:

I have a new kid who I am training. We hired him because supposedly he could do everything and electrical and troubleshooting were his strong points.
I had him put a switch and outlet in a small closet yesterday. He came to me all excited telling me he’s ready to pull wire.
