Hikvision as a brand

I'll have to ask him because if he shows me in the day of the install, it will be too late.

so what do you think is more important, newer camera with ColorVu 3.0 and more modern video processing and AI detections or a camera with better night performance?

by the way, the first one is also new, according to their site.

yes there are differences. all the numbers in the DORI in the 4mp model are lower. since my property is not that big, I figure those lower numbers are better for me. the Minimum Illumination is lower in the 4mp model which I think is better right? here are all the differences. still not 100% sure which model is better.

ok so my installer said the above two cameras are pretty much the same except for the 4mp vs 8mp. the 4mp needs less light. he also said that when using software to zoom in on something, it will look better on the 8mp camera. my question is, do you think the image quality be too low when zooming in on the 4mp camera vs the 8mp camera?

That is what we have been saying.

It is the same camera just the resolution is different.

Both cameras are on the same sensor and processor, so the processor will have to work harder to deal with the 8MP than the 4MP.

It is almost always best to chose a camera with lower MP on the same size sensor as a higher MP camera.

Digital zoom only works in the movies and TV. See this thread where someone was upset that the digital zoom didn't work better with a higher MP camera (8MP versus 3MP). It is because movies and TV make it look like magic.

Sure we can get away with some, but not a lot.

During the day it would be beneficial in some situations, but most of us the bad stuff happens when it is dark and that is where the 4MP will do better.

You are better off to have a camera with the optical zoom for the area you want than relying on digital zoom after the fact.

At night, at the fringes, the 4MP will show an identifiable image where the 8MP will show an unidentifiable blob. And when the 4MP is showing an unidentifiable blob, the 8MP won't know anything is there at all.

ok thanks for that info. for the camera that will be at my front entrance/porch, the porch is about 8x5 feet. I would like to capture this entire area. do you think 4mm would cover it or should I go with 2.8mm? the camera will be mounted above the door, at one of the corners of the porch.

@jvpix.com what are the size of the sensors ..

Digital zoom only useful to the point you are getting effective quality pixels .. typically 8MP cameras do well when the lighting conditions are great, and not well in low light as often the 8MP camera is on a sensor with smaller pixel size. ( compared to say a 4MP on the same size and same tech level of sensor )

I use 3.6mm fixed lens at all of my entrances. But if you're committed to seeing as much area as possible and sacrificing some marginally better ID , then go with the 2.8. You'll likely just see more wall
