New Hikvision Hybrid Thermal Cams

I'm getting this cam set up still. Its pretty neat. One question I had though. Would I need to add the camera twice in BI or clone camera in order to have one feed for optical camera and one feed for thermal only in my BI mobile app?

You do need to add it twice (as two cameras) to get both optical and thermal video feeds. /101 is the main stream optical. /201 is main stream thermal.

Here's a couple of fun screenshots I just took.

I have it temporarily mounted in the closet where we have our water filters and hot water heater. First one is with no hot water flow to the sink, second one is after turning on the hot water. Note the heat at the cieling in the before, then it gets mixed throughout the closet when the water heater comes on. Seriously cool.

That mess it makes on the pipes is very interesting. I would have expected a MUCH smoother transition.

Also, which cam model did you get? -2, -3, or -6? Since your images are 16:9 and still very wide, I am suspecting it is the -3. I'm curious how they did the overlap between the thermal and optical images. On my -2 model, both sensors are natively 4:3 and the thermal camera's FOV is just slightly smaller and centered in the optical FOV. Also all the different streaming resolution options give the same field of view, just rescaled (without regard for preserving aspect ratio).
 
Mine is also the -2. I have the optical resolution at 1600x1200 (4:3) and thermal at 1280x720. The overlap is not perfect inside this closet but should be fine when I put it outside looking at my hayfield.
 
Ah okay, so your thermal video is just squished out of its normal aspect ratio. I did order a -3 and a -6 on Saturday just to have them around for future projects, but they haven't shipped yet.

I see Google now finds four stores selling these at a low price. I wonder how long it can last.
 
We're getting the first decent snow today. It certainly affects the thermal cam's image to some extent. The image seems to get noisier and also sometimes it loses a bit of visibility. Not sure if snow is sticking to the thermal lens or what. I do have noise reduction turned down a bit so it doesn't smooth over the image quite as much as default.

I finally have the other two models of this thermal camera in hand. They arrived in early December but I wasn't home so a neighbor had been holding the package for me.

Are you still using the white hot or black hot outside? I've been trying to use that too, as I've heard its better for detecting living things, but find myself switching back to rainbow. It seems to detect small animals better.
 
Yeah I still use white hot, mainly just because that is what I'm used to (my old FLIR TCX made by Dahua didn't have any thermal image configuration, so it was white hot all the time).

The Hikvision with the newer sensor consistently produces a higher-contrast image, and I don't think it is just because the two cameras have a different view. The Hikvision just has far-superior image processing.

Note that Hikvision's product pages for some of these claim higher thermal resolution at the top of the page, but say 160x120 down below in the detailed specs. I am pretty sure these all use the same 160x120 thermal sensors.
 
Has anyone updated their DS-2TD1217 to this firmware release: Camera Module V5.5.22 build 20200608 / VCA Optimization Main Firmware 5.5.22.210123 :thumbdown: Six of mine came with 5.5.16.190429 a few years ago and recently updated a couple to 5.5.18.191202 / 5.5.22.201106. There were quite a few updates and feature enhancements in both releases but didn't like losing the PIP slider to change the fusion blending. :banghead:
 
The one I currently have active is running V5.5.18 build 191202. I haven't uploaded any updates. What are the new versions supposed to improve?

I'm trying to find the release notes for the latest firmware release and I want to say they may have labeled it the same version by mistake. As the one I saw talked about the new and deprecated features in Camera Module V5.5.22 build 20200608 / VCA Optimization Main Firmware 5.5.22.210123. Regardless, just wanted to know if anyone has tried to update their thermal cams to this latest Main / VCA as there are some great updates.

I haven't as I am unsure if this firmware is correct for the DS-2TD1217 V1 even though all documents indicates it does apply. :thumbdown:

Lastly, there were quite a few changes from 5.5.16 -> to 5.5.18 which didn't talk about network & other features added & deprecated. Going to 5.5.22 also had features added and deprecated not indicated in the release notes! :facepalm: I didn't like losing the PIP -> Details Overlay -> Imaging Fusion / Border Fusion Ratio which is still present in 5.5.18 but removed in 5.5.22.201106.

But have to say having the ability to upload a video through FTP is awesome vs a still photo! They have also included cloud integration via their NVR's which I was really hoping it could be done natively through the camera. :(

So, if anyone is brave enough to load this latest on their thermal cam please do let me know the results. :thumb:

Yesterday my thermal cam started misbehaving. It would shift to a cloudy gray, slowly begin resolving details, then go back to a gray cloud again. I've seen that before. This is what happens when the thermal camera calibrates itself without closing the internal mechanical shutter first. Obviously the shutter had gotten stuck. This sometimes happens with mechanical IR-CUT filters in regular cameras, and thermal cameras actuate their shutter hundreds of times every day so I guess the failure rate is probably worse.

I power cycled the camera twice and even went out and punched it a few times to try to shake the shutter loose, but was unsuccessful. So I took the camera down and disassembled it.

One half of the turret contains most of the computer, and the other has the two camera modules and IR LED + light sensor. These halves are connected by 3 cables.

Unfortunately as I was disconnecting cables to get the thermal sensor out and give it some good whacks with a hammer, my chair arm caught the camera's pigtail and pulled it all off my desk. It hit the floor and snapped the ribbon cable for the visible-light camera. The break was right at one end so I tried "making a new end" by stripping back the shielding with a knife and a razor blade and eventually an open flame. But the shielding is glued on and difficult to work with. I have thus far been unsuccessful.

So I learned a little about Flexible flat cable and made measurements and ordered a possible replacement. I hope it is a good match. There are 36 pins and I measured the distance between the center of the first pin and center of the last pin to be 17.65 millimeters. Math tells me the pitch (distance between centers of each pin) should therefore be 0.50428571428 millimeters. The closest replacement cable I could find was of course just 0.5 millimeter pitch. This sounds like a small error but across all 36 pins, the accumulated error is nearly one entire pin width. With any luck, my caliper just sucks and the cable I ordered will be correct. If not, well at least I didn't break the thermal camera's ribbon cable because that one looks like it would be a lot harder to replace.


Oh, and yes, whacking the thermal sensor with a hammer did eventually get the mechanical shutter working again. Percussive maintenance is still a thing.

Update: Oh, never mind. The shutter stopped working again.
