Thanks Andy.

Just upgraded from V4.001.0000003.1, Build Date: 2020-08-13. Did a default (not sure if I needed to do that but did it anyhow). So far so good.

I see the new 'Face and Body Detection' but I don't think my NVR (NVR-5216-16P-4KS2E) supports that. Wish it did :)

I would think it does now, but your cameras may not?
Ya, I thought the cameras did ( IPC-T5442TM-AS) based on the Dahua specs (face detection at the very least) but I could never seem to get it working so I gave up.

Was also trying to validate the update by checking the video clip export format as mentioned by Andy. I could never seem to find a 'download' or 'export' button using the Web GUI for exporting video. Have always had to rely on SmartPSS. Tried using Edge browser, Chrome, Safari. Cannot get Internet Explorer for my Mac so that was out of the question. I'm guessing it only works with IE.

So the version listed in the list is referring specifically to the hardware version of the NVR I assume?
This forum beeing my unpaid second job, I came to the conclusion that no rules apply to all cases. Actually it feels like playing russian roullete.

In the next quote (actually the entire thread where it belongs) you can read that firmwares allegedly only applicable to hardware versions v2 were successfully applied on to v1 NVRs.

I just finish the updating on my NVR5216-4ks2 V1 made in 2017 and NVR5216-16P-4KS2 made in 2017 both can work well, the version before update No. as below.

The version update after updated. 4.0 AI version.

Also, the fact that the NVR external case has a label indicating a v2 doesn't mean that the hardware version inside is v2. Several posts indicate you cannot trust the label.

My conclusions:
As empirecandy has often written, we do it at our own risk and,

as looney2ns always writes, perhaps,

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I just share what i get for members here to keep updating their NVRs/Cams with latest fw, but this is a public place, new guys even not check carefully and flash the firmware and brick the NVR, and i get some blame before, so from your speech, looney & i need to undertake the risk??

I just try to make this place always can get the latest new fw than official website no matter if buy from us or not, If you don't trust just not use it. That is all.

Either you didn't understand me or I didn't know how to convey what I meant.

No one is blaming you of anything nor should you or looney '"undertake the risk".

I meant that this isn't always black and white, sometimes it is grey. I also meant that looney is right: we have to restrict ourselves from upgrading unless we really need something from a new firmware or our running fw is not working properly.

Ultimately, even though we like Dahua so much, it seems to be an endless road of bugs and hours devoted to our setups.

Your commitment and efforts are much appreciated. But you said it better than I have:
Dahua engineers sometimes sucked, can't trust them too much.;):banghead:
I hope I am not misunderstood this time.

I appreciate what you do for the community here Andy. Please don't stop or change what you have done all of these years here.

If your NVR already use the 4.0 Firmware(Firmware date start from 2020 ), then can use this fw without problem.
I have the NVR5208-4KS2 (V1.0) running nicely with V4.000.0000000.1 20190809 firmware. So although it's running a V4 firmware, it is a late 2019 build, not V4/2020+.

Should I first try to update to a later V4 firmware known to work on V1 hardware? If so, any recommendations on which one?

If the gap has 1 year+ better add to the newer firmware firstly, better not use the latest, easy brick. Only NVR has this problem, cams no big problem.
Try this one firstly, if OK, then update with this latest new one.
