Compare those with @CanCuba who has airport runway lighting and see the difference.

Just like all other cameras, its all about light

I have one 2.8mm 4K-X bullet original firmware version from the year 2021 as an overview camera. I don't really notice the close-focusing problem like other guys often mention here in the forum. Maybe I got lucky or the 2.8mm 4K-X bullet version do better than other versions of this camera with the focus problem. For me, other then the size of the 4K-X bullet is too big and the mic volume is kind of low I'm very happy with the camera and it's working well 3 plus years now.

Original FW 4K-X bullet 3.6mm

Notice the first 6-8ft or so on the shutter is blurred

Distances to me
1- 12ft
2- 35ft
3- 50ft
Looks like some minimal blurring on the rooftop within that 6-8 ft, although watching you come out walking does look clear.

At 12ft it looks like I would be able to identify

At 35ft were about loosing identify it seems. Looks like we might be able to identify well up to 20ft even using the 3.6 mm.

So at night-time these distances can diminish?

Our long time resident camera expert Wildcat ran the Dahua 4K/X 8MP 1/1.2" sensor thru the paces. Keep in mind this 4K/X camera is incredible.

He had the 3.6mm version and here is the screenshot from 40 feet in the ideal daylight and standing still, which based on DORI numbers is the supposed IDENTIFY distance for this camera with the 3.6mm lens and I think most of would agree that this is not IDENTIFY quality, even if digitally zoomed in:

I have the 4K/X and 4K/T and they are incredible cameras, but I wouldn't use it for IDENTIFY past 15-20 feet, or half of what the DORI number is.
Thanks for sharing that photo. I have watched a few of his videos.

Yeah, I see now how no way can we identify far beyond 20ft using the 4K-X 3.6mm. Great distance view. I can make out somebody there but will never be able to identify at that range using that size focal length. I'm starting to get it more so. :thumb:

Take a look at this video where I compared the 2.8mm, 3.6mm, and 6mm 4K-X cameras. The telephone pole in the center of the screen is exactly 50' from the 4K-X. The middle of the street is 32', and when the guy crosses in front of the camera at 2:51, he is 13' from the 6mm camera. Be sure to watch it in 2160p.

I agree with the sizing of the 4K-X bullet being a bit on the large side. I also feel that way too, reason being I thought the turret version would look better against my wall. I would like to see the turret version also come in the 6 mm lens (like with the bullet version).

I also like that the turret versions come in black. Would be nice to see the bullet in black.

Can the firmware on these security cameras always be downgraded if ever necessary?

Very nice. Thanks for sharing the videos. You caught some possums there on the 2.8 mm. :)

Night time view looks a little fuzzy. Day time looks much sharper.

I like the 3.6 and 6 mm cameras.

I went ahead and purchased the following three cameras today through Amazon.

4K-T turret 3.6mm
4K-X 6 mm
IPC-T54IR-ZE varifocul 4MP 1/1.8

I almost went with the 8MP for the varifocul until I looked at that chart which showed the 4MP at that sensor size would perform better at night.

This will be my first head dive into this. Hopefully I made the right choices. Thanks to many of the forum members here that shared much insight.

I have a question, if I was to upgrade a firmware on these cameras do I have the ability to downgrade them if necessary. To revert back to a previously installed firmware?

Those are some good choices.

Yes you can downgrade the firmware as long as you have a copy of it.
Thank you. And thanks for confirming the ability to downgrade the firmware. Nice to know were not locked like on my IOS phone.

I'm also planning on picking up a copy of the Blue Iris through this site here. While I currently know nothing about the software, I'm hoping to master it soon enough. :)

Another question, I'm interested in trying to force night color using the IR on the varifocal camera (if at all possible) as the area of install does have some exterior lighting including the street light.

The question is, if I'm not able to force color due to any given area not providing enough ambient lighting, would adding an external IR illuminator (mounted in the proximity of the camera) also work to achieve night time color on the T54IR-ZE?

BI has a demo for 14 days, so try it before you buy it.

If you force the camera into color and there isn't enough white light, then you need to add additional white light. Adding external IR illuminator does nothing for color settings.

But the external IR would help the camera when in B/W IR mode.

Thanks, will check that out. Is blue iris the recommended surveillance software? I'm honestly not familiar with any others except for the amcrest app that I have on my phone for viewing our front doorbell.

I saw there is also an app version of the BI for the phone. You also use any phone app to view these cameras?

OK, got it. Thank you for that info about the forced night color.

I have a location in the back of the house that is pitch dark. I was planning on installing a fourth camera back there after I get these setup around the front of the house. I do like the varifocal approach. But maybe the 4K-X may be better suited if were trying to achieve some night color.

Do they sell special white lights that would be ideal for such a thing (forcing night color on cameras only equipped with IR) or just any external outdoor lighting might suffice?
