Initially, it sounds like he started it with gas and failed to cap and move the gas can far away before he ignited what was to be burned. It's unclear, based on what I read. But it would not surprise me, people do it all the time and somehow get away with it.
I'll bet the poor bastard won't do that again.....so very sad.
