Is there a big difference in the 5400 vs 7200.

Anyone have experience with the two.

150 MB/s vs 200 MB/s for the 4tb drive.

Some of the tech spec advantages of the Black 7200 over the Purple 5400 mean nothing in a surveillance application such as buffer cache.
So what would you recommend for a 4tb hd

I just received my NVR5424-24P-4KS2 from Andy. It can hold up to four 8TB HDD drives. I was planning on using WD purple 5400 rpm drives but the NVR instructions says to please use HDD of 7200 RPM or higher and not to use PC HDD. I know the reason for not to using a PC HDD but why would the manufacturer insist on 7200 RPM if it makes no difference between 5400 and 7200 in a surveillance system?
The NVR from Andy is unbranded but I'm assuming its a Dahua.

because they dont want folks using standard 5400 rpm drives...

I think the concern on PC drives was the load/unload. I bought a bunch of greens way back and misused them in devices like this. They hit pre fail very quickly. Allegedly there were firmware hacks to change the color of the drive but I never ventured there.

It's about the data density on the drive, what makes it fast.
A 5400rpm drive can be faster then a 7200 rpm drive. 7200rpm uses more power...and is less reliable. And letting the drive run faster is the cheapest way for manufacturer to make it faster.

The purple disk is the best to get. The main difference with other drives is the error recovery part, default is no recovery. With a normal drive, the recovery is on and that will result in lost frames when using continuous recording with a nvr.

I ordered a 8tb purple for my new nvr. Already have the drive, but waiting for the new nvr 5216-4ks2 v2.00 I ordered by @EMPIRETECANDY.

Guido87,
How do you know your NVR is V2.00? I was looking at the NVR's Andy has on his website and I did see anything that said V2.00 on any of them. I received my NVR5424-24P-4KS2 from @EMPIRETECANDY last week and would like to know if mine V2.00.

I dont know exactly. The 52(32/16)-16p-4ks2e, has the E. Stands for the epoe, 8ports are epoe for 800m.

The difference for the old and v2.00 is for so i can see at the dahua site... The smart fan... and the smart codec. The rack mount is different... and the dahua site already says smart codec for that model.

There is no big differce between i think, die the rack mount model there is no v2.00 i think. Only the 4ks2e has the epoe.
Maybe @EMPIRETECANDY can tell us what is new on the v2.00 without the poe. Maybe some hardware changes?

Since this thread was last active Western Digital have released a Purple 10TB HDD with a choice of 5400rpm or 7200rpm spin. There's a modest price premium for the 7200rpm model. There's also available now a 12TB HDD at 7200rpm.
I am attracted to the idea of having just one high capacity HDD, and 10TB would be enough here. Given that I have a choice of 5400 or 7200, I guess the choice is between speed versus reliability, does the enhanced performance of a 7200rpm HDD count for anything in a surveillance system?
