IPC-HDW5231R-ZE 1/2.8” 2Megapixel progressive scan STARVIS™ CMOS
IPC-HDW5231R-Z 1/2.8” 2Megapixel progressive scan Exmor CMOS

It would seem after finding some videos on youtube comparing them both that the STARVIS is very much better, just like y'all have shown here.
So I am changing my build to the ZE model.
They both have STARVIS, for what it’s worth. The Z model has been the forum goto camera since it came out in late ‘16 because of that.

Another diff is cosmetic. The front of the ZE is almost entirely black, whereas the front of the Z has white metal in the areas between the lens and infrared. For me, the Z blends much better against the soffit/trim of my house than the ZE.

Ok after rereading this whole subject over again, I noticed people wondering what the big difference is and so far all I can tell comparing specs is the cmos.

Sooo, have you seen page 1 of this thread?

So..what settings do you guys use?
I know every situation is different, some have streetlamps, some have external IR-emitters, some are in a pitch black setting.
But I'm just curious.

In my situation there are some street lights, but they don't give near enough light to be usable for the camera. To far away and wrong direction.

I have separate day and night settings and I use the Schedule to change between day and night.
Dahau unfortunately does not support automatisch switching and I don't have a PC running 24/7 to run the known script that's floating around on this forum.
Every so often I change the times on the schedule in accordance to the current sunrise and sunset times.
I don't record 24/7, I use Tripwire with a zigzag line on the street/driveway border and record to a 128GB card.

Daytime:
- Picture: all unchanged at 50.
- Exposure: Anti-flicker at Outdoor. Manual Mode, shutter 1/250, gain 0-0, Auto Iris on, 3D NR on, Grade 0.
- Backlight off.
- WB: Auto
- Day & Night: Color
- IR LIght: SmartIR

Night:
- Picture: all unchanged at 50.
- Exposure: Anti-flicker at Outdoor. Manual Mode, shutter 1/100, gain 0-50, Auto Iris on, 3D NR on, Grade 15.
- Backlight off.
- WB: Auto
- Day & Night: B/W
- IR LIght: SmartIR

I'm still playing with the settings though. Still fiddling around seeing what settings do to the image.
Mostly during night time. My night time images/video are much darker than I see on other peoples screenshots likely due my shutter and gain settings.
But I can't really change them to get the image brighter since that makes people at night look like ghosts. :p

I think after reading all of these, I am gonna just order a couple of the Z models, so i can do like everyone on here has been saying about testing them out and checking locations.
Anyone here a fan of bullets also? or should I just go all out with these turrets?
Hell does Dahua even make audio bullets?

Gonna order From Andy after the New Year.

I'd stick with the turrets and, if you can add external IR, even better, although external IR will work with a bullet IF you can shut of the internal IR. The way the IR LEDs are separated from the lens on a turret helps reduce the bug problems quite a bit.

Thanx brother,
I think I will just go full turret then and they are harder to steal also.

My system is off for a while and I can't check it out, but I remember, that it should be a setting, with local zooming(forgot the name). Maybe that is set and that is why, it is clearer in an area and not in another area.

Yeah, there's a fence sort of in the middle of the field of view and I have an 11 watt IR on each side of the fence. The IR in the camera is set to off, no need for it. The IR lights are well away from the camera, about 30 feet, and about five feet lower with the camera being at about nine feet above ground. The fence is vinyl lattice and you can see the shadows of the fence from the IR lighting and the visible lighting. The camera will go into day mode when we turn on the 50 watt LED flood at the peak of the gable end. It has to be snowing or raining really hard to see it on the 5231R while the bullets I have are half blinded by it, but you can see the rain in the streetlight about 400 feet from the 5231R.

Thanks. Any reason why you've chosen Auto Mode in Exposure? Don't you have issues with unsharp images of people (ghost) for example?

I've got a 750m long driveway, its really tempting to buy some cheap RG6 or cat5e and these cameras and running one out to the road.

Has anyone done any longer distance epoe with these?
