Hello. I’ll start with the noob apology upfront. I tried doing quite a few keyword searches and still haven’t made much forward movement, so I apologize for what I’m asking.

I have a Dahua system I’m struggling with.
2 PTZ1A225U-IRA-N cameras with a NVR5208-8P-4KS2 NVR.

I stared this install last year. But had to leave the country for work. I’m back at it now and wanted to add 3 SD1A203T-GN 2MP. When I left it a year ago I put in an 8TB in the nvr and I learned the CAT6 cable lesson.
I plan to replace the CAT6 I bought on amazon with what I got on monoprice.

The main purpose of this system is for me to monitor remotley as I work overseas and want eyes on the property.

With that, I have 2 Questions

1) Should I swap to Blueiris? I really don’t know the pros cons. But if ease of install and remote acres is one I’d like to do that.

2). Is there a place that shows a step by step (hopefully with pictures) of an install? (Not the physical cameras, but the networking part once the cables are run, tested and plugged in) I have tried but can’t find it and at this point I can’t even find a good place to start. Im wondering if the hard drive would be full at this point or maybe some other issue I might have after leaving it running unmonitored a year or so.
Again, thanks for the noob assist. All responses appreciated.

:welcome:
--------------------------------------------
1) you will need to set up OpenVPN on your home network to allow remote access. Both Blue Iris and the NVR both will allow remote access.
2) the hard drive will not fill up, as it is near full the old video files are over written.
3) I do not know of any picture based instructions.

I do not recommend PTZ cameras as they will be pointed in the wrong direction when the action occurs. Use multiple cameras for 100 % coverage 100% of the time. But your choice of the PTZ1A225U-IRA-N is a top of the line camera with Starlight.

Take your time, Go slow and keep it simple. Plan and study.
This forum is a store house of knowledge and has a number of very skilled people.

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras or ICPT Night eye cameras (Store | IP Cam Talk) if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 8ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
15) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3

Thank you both. I’ve been lurking quite some time.
I’ve hit the wiki quite a bit. The above post has pointed me in some new areas I hadn’t seen yet.
what have you decided on doing?
if blue iris follow this and ask a question if you are not understanding a step:

You will not be able to get away with having a blue iris setup without everything in that thread.

Hahaha. I’m sure I’m missing many steps. I had assumed this would be a bit more intuitive than it is. I’ll take a look at this link.
Right now I’m trying to figure out how how to get the dahua config tool setup. I am not even sure how to connect the nvr to the computer. Again, I’m missing some crucial steps.

What is not intuitive. We can help with specific questions.

Are you going with bi setup?

If going with NVR then the NVR would auto-detect no need for config tool. You can use config tool with switch/computer. I like setting the NIC card to the dahua IP 192.168.1.xxx (anything but .108) and entering the camera IP into the web browser "192.168.1.108" 1 at a time in a web browser but it is more time consuming than config tool. Everyone has preference.

What was the CAT6 cable lesson that you learned?
