2MP vs 4MP?

I am planning to get couple of domes, but I see that 2MP & 4MP domes have almost the same price. Is there any benefit of 2MP at night time even though sensor, sensitivity specs appear to be the same?

The new 4mp hik cams reportedly have the best night vision so far with 0.001 lux.

There are two version that are new 4mp and 2mp the specs are identical, as well as sensitivity of 0.01. The question is what's the benefit of 2mp version which is not obvious from reading the specs.

Me personally I am happy with my 2MP cams. I have one three mp and the night vision is okay but noisy so that I don't get ghosting.

But why?

For instance, previously 1.3MP vs 3MP, we knew that 1.3MP was better at night due to better sensitivity 0.01 vs 0.07, but for 2MP vs 4MP, it's no longer the case. So, why would it be better?

Its not about the lux rating hikvision puts on the camera.
All things being equal the 2mp will be better in low light. See this explanation

I think it has to do with less processing of the image. I just wish Hikvision would release a turret with a varifocal lense!!

Bigger sensor (lower pixel density per area) generally means less noise. It's not as easy as comparing numbers with numbers. Side by side comparison will help. I don't have a 2MP WDR for when I do that though :-(

Yeah, I can't find any samples on youtube and contemplating which one to get. In the 4MP camera you can reduce to 2MP image which will hide the noise. I am more curious if true 2MP sensor will be better at night.

No you can't reduce the resolution to hide the noise (pixel density is still the same). Will it be better... most probably... by how much... no-one has both yet to compare.

Think of it this way - If you take a 12MP photo on your iPhone but reduce it to 5MP, will it be better than your 5MP digital camera?

I kinda get "annoyed" at seeing the criticism on the HD cameras. I think some of you should go back to analog and you'll enjoy any HD picture you get lol
I'm just giving you all a hard time, but I'm quite satisfied with all the HD images I see from most cameras posted here lol.

The days of 56k dial up, if you didn't' live it, you don't understand how made you have it these days with high speed internet haha

Probably need direct comparison to make the judgement. Btw, I noticed that 2MP doesn't have 2.8mm lens as an option, I guess that answers my question which one to get now.

One of the resellers said that they do have 2.8mm option for 2MP... either they are clueless or the spec is incorrect at Hikvision site.

Could be either! Both have been known to be wrong before.

Make sure it's definitely the WD model. The 2.8mm model is available for the non WD range.

This man is correct.

Instead of increased resolution (e.g. 4K), what we really need is:
1. Better night performance; and
2. More accurate pixel based motion detection (e.g. not triggering an event for every moth that flies by).

The 4mp has better nightvision than the 3mp, but likely is not better than the new or older 2mp or the older 1.3mp cameras. Even on the 3mp, the nighvision is not bad if you have adequate lighting...everyone seems to want noiseless night images in pitch black lighting in areas that have nothing to reflect the IR...The technology for good night vision is here with hikvisions darkfighter and Bosch starlight, but is not yet affordable.
