You need to do a few drive bys yourself then. Gonna be a long slog to get this figured out if you only have 1 car/night going by for testing.

I saw your review on the poe illuminator. I'm running about the same distance as you. Between 110-130 feet. Do you think that illuminator will help brighten my images?

Try the settings I gave you in Post 43 - brightness, contrast, NR, etc. you have them all at default 50 and that is why it is trash.

Just for grins, set your Day/Night setting to "B&W" for night profile as shown above. I almost wonder if there's some ambient light source not allowing IR to come on?
And yes, drop NR down

But I dont think you are going to see brighter plates at 1/2000 than what you show at 1/1000

Its pitch black out there. I have a few uplights on my house but it's never been enough to not switch to bw. Just switched to bw for all time. Should I check out that poe Axton 10 degree ir? Looks like you left a good review.

Don't get an external until you have exhausted all attempts at a good picture., like adjusting the settings I told you to change.

Even with external IR, running the camera on default like you did will still result in poor results.

You should be able to get 100-130 feet with onboard, especially Texas plates.

Question. The 10 degree ir was for over 500 feet and the 30 degree almost 300. Is the 10 degree worth it? That much stronger get of a focused beam?

If I am getting external IR for LPR purposes, I am getting as tight of a focused beam as possible. We are zoomed in so tight that it doesn't make much sense to waste IR outside the field of view.

Also keep in mind if you do add external IR for LPR, you need to locate it as a close to the camera as possible due to the way plates reflect light back - it is more critical than external IR for other purposes.

It's poe so I was going to get a splitter and put it right next to the camera. Hopefully that helps me get the plates at night.

Yeah I thought you might have difficulty finding a replacement for the camera that would be powerful enough and fit within the existing camera.

The Z12E is a workhorse and the preferred camera by many here to set it up to capture plates and then use a 3rd party to read/log the plates if so inclined. But many here simply let it record video/pics and then manually read it if they have a reason to need to find the plate.

If you go that route then repurpose your existing cam for other duty - 2MP on a 1/1.8" sensor would be great for IDENTIFY at a point about 40 feet out.

Random question. I have the z12e and it has web gui 4. When I'm on my phone and connected to the network I type the ip address and the gui comes up but it always says wrong password. I can login from my laptop all day long no problems. Are there issues with mobile device login with web 4? I can login to all my other cameras on a mobile device no issues.

Try clearing the cache on the mobile device or try another browser.

I cant say Ive ever used a phone to login to the NVR interface... I know only certain browsers will work. I was surprised to login just now using Chrome on IOS

So I got the axton hooked up. I see 3 red ir dots on it but it's still very dark. How do I know if this thing is working? Should it be more than 3 red dots?

You go into the camera and put the shutter on auto and turn off internal IR and see if you see the blast of IR from the axton.
