Good morning all,

first a warm greeting from the Netherlands. My name is Chris and I am looking for an ip camera system. I've been searching the forum for days but I can't figure it out! I currently have a NEST IQ outdoor but the quality is poor. I'm not sure about the location (see photo). Can you advise me on this?

I'm looking for 2 cameras (dome )for the front yard, great fast quality and preferably unobtrusive. I like the mini dome type (IPC-HDBW4231F). What is currently the best small dome? I don't have a budget. Thanks in advance for the response! I use a synology nas but an nvr is also an option.

Welcome @Chris7806

In general your mounting locations for cameras are too high if you want to have a better chance to get an ID image ( facial ID ).

Also when determining what you need, you'll want to decide what you want.

Do you want to ID people coming to your front door?
or
Do you want to keep an eye on the parked cars?

Do you need to capture images in low light conditions ( night time ) or
just
Daytime?

Do take a look at the cliff notes

until recently I wanted everything.

i thought if i have the hdbw8630e i have everything. Andy didn't have this in stock. I tried a brickom (high 82ft) last week on option 1 and that gave a good overview. faces were easily recognizable. I have put a traffic pole in the garden that has already been driven around. I want to see that to read the license plate. which might be an option to hang a dome camera on option 1. I think the fixed dome (smallest) is the nicest. I am open to all options! starlight looks good at night but is the 2mp good enough to read the license plate at 8 a 9 meters? the IQ also has 2mp and it doesn't work.

The garden is under construction. Lighting comes in the planters

I do not need a PTZ camera and a fixed lens 3.8 mm is also good

Hi @Chris7806

"..but is the 2mp good enough to read the license plate at 8 a 9 meters..?"

capturing license plates during the day is largely a function of pixel density, angle to the license plate, how fast the car is going, shutter speed.

Can a 2MP camera capture a license plate - yes, absolutely - but you do need to ensure that you have properly set the FOV to have enough pixels on target.

During the night capturing license plates get more complex and a bit of an art as the license plates often reflect light and thus the cameras need to be tuned - do see the LPR section on that.

:welcome:

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Please read the cliff notes and other items in the wiki. The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras or ICPT Night eye cameras (https://store.ipcamtalk.com/) if you need good low light cameras.
2) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
3) Do not use wifi cameras.
4) Do not use cloud storage
5) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
6) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
7) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
8) Do not use reolink, ring, nest cameras (they are junk)
9) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
10) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)

Read, study, plan before spending money ..... plan plan plan
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

test your camera location. Get a bucket fill it with sand or rocks get a 2x4 8ft long, mount the camera on the 2x4 and see if the location works, test at night.

My test rig: rev.2

if you park in the driveway, two cameras one on each side of the garage , no higher than the top of the garage door.

test do not guess.

Thanks to everyone for the responses and for thinking along. This will be the location of the camera. I made the overview photo with my iPad, good enough for me to get everything in view. with a 100 degree + camera I get a little more image. what is the best option for a dome at the moment?

Will the new dome models from 2019 already come? Which NVR do you recommend for 3 or 4 cameras?

Hi Chris, another Dutchy here as well looking at setting up a camera. If you read the cliff notes you should have come by the “domes are not good for outside usage”. Mostly because of IR reflection and the plastic dome getting damaged by UV causing an unclear image. On this forum lots speak highly about the 5231 if I recall correctly. We are all waiting for the review on the 5442 that is expected any day now.
