Sorry, types them backwards, but the point is the same. Only need 25 megabytes/sec for 4K at 15fps

And my camera “lingo” might be off, but again the point is the same. Raw/lossless... I am saying 100% no compression or downsizing
you are incorrect. Go back and do your math again.
Now you are saying 25 megabytes per second. Assuming your incorrect numbers, that is max 5 cameras running at the theoretical max of the switch? Now, one hour of storage will require about 1.5tb of space. Even if all your drives at 10TB drives and you have a modest 8 camera system you are talking a few hours of recording.

Hi @Dsmtweaker

I do expect people who work with SQL to know about BLOB storage requirements, and exchange admins to also know about storage requirements and assisting users in keeping to their quotes. In both cases I do expect the admin to know DLC issues and data storage requirements along with the associated bandwidth requires. Furthermore any IT professional I still expect to know the basics of IT facts.

Seriously all the stuff I have listed is really basic IT stuff.
Ok, some of it is, and all of those I understand. Yet with all of that, it doesn’t answer the question of the dslr comparison. Your telling me that compression(h264) takes that much quality(60+ %) from the dslr.

The lens portion doesn’t make sense, because the dslr lens is giving about the same fov.

The sensor doesn’t make sense, because that would effect the resolution much more than the quality.

Jesus, now you have me turned around.

For storage, it records on movement trigger (not continually).

The transfer rate is still 25mbps on a 1000mbps network. Standard gig, not GB network.

in post 60 you said megaBYTES!!!!! make up your mind.
raw 4k is not 25mbps, you are simply clueless in that respect.

@Dsmtweaker

Think about it this way:

Business unit asks for SQL server for their work

Can you fulfill that requirement to their satisfaction? Well, not until you know more.. SO like that:

Come back with the data for the camera image which you believe meets your requirements.

Once you have that data you can work the problem out. Until then...

Well, as a business man. If a business asks you for an SQL server for their work, then you answer “yes”. Not ask more questions...

But, if you prefer I just tell you what I need. Instead of learning....I’ll play your game... I need an Outdoor day/night IP camera that has a wide angle fov to overlook parking light, but can also read a business card from 200 yards away (in the dark) without optical zoom, for under $200 including installation.

@Dsmtweaker

OMFG - seriously, have you not heard of gathering requirements before committing to a IT project????

You have NO idea of the business unit wants a massively HA distributed SQl store with quick responses..... or if it's just a small instance for dev testing...

I’m not going to keep arguing or explaining simple transfer rates with you. I know how little it takes, and can confidently say I understand it better than you, and anyone you have ever met, combined.

That’s not an insult, that’s just the truth. Your out of your realm and knowledge on this one

It doesn’t matter what they want, if that’s what they want, that’s what I deliver. 30 years in business, My company grossed 3million last year, and never once have I, or would I ask something so stupid

Hi @Dsmtweaker

I call your BS.

1) It is clear you do not RTFM
2) Lack extensive IT skills which even the most entry level position should have
3) Are unable to do basic math to save yourself
4) Have no understanding of basic IT concepts which are taught in any educational programs to people
5) claim to have worked 30 years in this business - yet claim to be an IT expert, a networking expert, a MS exchange / MS SQL expert ....
6) ....

FYI - for those following, this is clearly a fraudulent representation upon closer inspection of the images provided.

The images are from a different shot. There simply are not enough pixels for the other images to be a part of the original image.

You can tell when you inspect the resolution, the larger image is indeed 14MP - however the smaller 3x and 5x images can not be produced from the larger image once you take into account the resolution and dimensions of the images.

See the yellow circle. This is all the same single shot, not a different angle, not different pictures. I only took one photo, then digitally zoomed in on it from my computer after I pulled it off the camera.

Starting a pissing match with respected forum members here, who I assure you, have an enormous amount of experience and expertise in this field is counterproductive if you're still interested in learning what will solve your problems.

I do understand that new people here are often given short, somewhat cold, or even rude answers. But to benefit the most, you have to get past that, and not let your ego lead you into arguing or trying to impress everyone with your expertise.

As I often thought (but didn't say) to my customers, when they tried to second guess my troubleshooting procedures and experience: " If you could fix this yourself, you wouldn't need to call me."

The same holds true here.

If you want the help and knowledge of what I assure you is a fantastic pool of world class security camera system experts who will spend an enormous amount of their personal time to help others with no compensation whatsoever, you have to swallow your pride and be a bit more humble and tolerant.

Believe me, it will be worth it.

This forum can turn people off. But if you take more time, and read through some of the threads, I think you will gain an appreciation and respect for the expertise these folks have to offer.

Arguing and telling people that they're wrong is not the way to gain their willingness to help you over the rough spots you encounter.

The DSLR versus security camera question is a natural thing to ask. But this is a deep subject, and you will need to understand a lot of rather esoteric subtleties to fully understand the reasons why a typical security camera doesn't give the image detail that a large still camera can.

And I get that your original goal was to be able to explain this to your boss, who probably understands this even less than you do.

But this is non trivial.

Suffice it to say that to do what he wants (cover a very wide angle of view while also capturing enough detail to do LPR and facial recognition at long distances) is not going to happen with a single reasonably-priced security camera.

So once that point is accepted, the question should be: "How can I achieve the goals I really need?"

Normally, people put in some wide-coverage cameras to give an overview of various areas, and then supplement those with tighter-view cameras that give identification-grade images over smaller critical areas.

We're normally trying to get the necessary data recorded while keeping the cost, network, and data storage requirements to a minimum.

This shit just isn't as advanced as one might wish. Especially for reasonable prices. It gets better and better. But it's not magic.

And, as the old saying in photography goes; "There ain't no free lunch."

Everything is a matter of tradeoffs and compromises. Always.

Concentrate on solving the problem. You're getting sidetracked by ego-driven arguing with the very people you're asking for help.

You will be overwhelmed by the help you will get here if you can get past that.

Welcome to the forum! Really.

I'll have to check that out once I'm at a real computer.

I think the issue here is that you simply can’t compare a digital camera designed specifically to take still pictures with what effectively is a budget cctv cam. Things like the compression, cbr/vbr, bitrates and the lens all come into play.

If these cctv cams really product outstanding cinema quality output than films producers would be using the same or similar technology when producing films.

You’ll just have accept that this is a limitation so you either customer spends huge sums of money or they buy an extra few cams and install them closer to the action you want to record.

I’ve got 2Mp cctv cams installed and my Sony a6000 produces much better 1080p videos but when you look at the spec, the costs and the lens on the Sony you can understand why.

Yeah, that's what everybody wants but that ain't happenin. ; )

The title of the thread is appropriate. Your client's expectations are unrealistic. Need to reset accordingly. More money and more cams is the correct answer. If they want to pay somebody to walk the lot with a DSLR, then that's also an option.

So you wouldn’t ask basic questions like number of transactions, storage requirements, backup requirements, availability requirements, how many instances etc.

I work in IT and I would else you get something called requirement creep where your assumptions and your customers requirements don’t align which can end up with a whole lot of hassle and expense.

I was saying you would accept the job, then discuss the specifics, not discuss the specifics before accepting the job.

If you read this thread from the beginning you will see I explained my complete lack of knowledge, and asked questions. I didn’t throw the first punch, I started being personally attacked by these “respected experts”.

Respect is an earned trait, and isn’t a parallel with knowledge, especially when the tactic of insulting is used for explanations . I understand there a lot of keyboard cowboys on every forum.

It took 4 pages of posts before any of my real questions got answered.

In between, somehow, my job, knowledge, and business all got attacked.

As I said in an early post, I am not trying to insight an argument, or troll, I was just trying to find answers, and was instead told RTFM. Well if that was the case forums wouldn’t exist, and the answers to my questions weren’t in TFM.
