    Previously opposed to Microsoft Windows

So I left Windows XP SP2 and went over to Apple in 2006. I know that I said on this forum that I would use Linux or Apple before Windows but difficulty with miniDSP on my Mac prompted me to purchase Windows 10 Home. After installing 10 I found that my old Dell monitor, that has a DVI -> HDMI...

Can someone recommend an IP camera?

I’m not sure I read it in it’s current form but I did notice that my switch is not listed. Oh well, I’ll still try it. I’ll go off the list for the next components. Thanks

Can someone recommend an IP camera?

Oh, I haven’t thought of using a varifocal to determine FOV at all locations. Excellent.

Can someone recommend an IP camera?

So far I have a Dell Optiplex 7040 (No OS yet) and a Netgear GS305P. I’m now looking for my 1st POE camera. I think it should be 4mp, turret, 3.6, 30fps. What other specs should I be looking for? Is Amazon a good source for cameras? Who should I avoid?

    Monitor size

I can see the appeal. I just finished installing Linux XFCE on my MT and connected it to my 52” plasma TV. The HDMI -> DVI adapter should arrive in a few weeks. Then it’s down to a 21” Dell monitor.

    My humble setup so far....

You have 2 Ethernet ports on your tower? I was thinking tower and POE switch to router.

    Monitor size

Yeah, a 43”/ 4K TV would be nice but I’m wondering what to expect using 3-4 HD cameras on a 20” DVI monitor.

    Camera for License Plates

    How about 100’?

    Monitor size

i will be receiving a MT for my 1st surveillance system in a few days. I have a DVI monitor and will buy a HDMI - DVI adapter.

Three monitors, the left and right ones minimize on their own.

So are you saying that your 3 monitors display full screen at the start of your viewing session? Then after a short time of looking at the keyboard, you look up to find your outer 2 monitors are minimized to the dock? If so, I’d say you hit the Minimize command key while you were “hen...

    Camera for License Plates

I too live on a cul de sac and want license AND face ID from about 100 yards out. Any camera recommendations and FOVs?

    My humble setup so far....

I’m not certain of the Windows offerings on eBay so I may have to resort to security software for Linux. Neither do I have a PC to create an ISO. I’ve been on Macs since 2006.

    My humble setup so far....

Wow! I didn’t know that because it’s a Dell it has a “permanent” license associated with it. That certainly is something to consider. Thanks a bunch.

    My humble setup so far....

None. I'm still researching and will probably be purchasing a MT this week. I need all the help before I purchase items not suited for my needs. i5-7500 3.8GGHZ or i7-6700 3.40GHz (7040/7050) is what I'm now looking at and also looking at a MT with no OS and my choice would be Linux OS...

    My humble setup so far....

eBay has more 7040s than 5040s. You have a dedicated GPU, correct? How many cameras? Total resolution?

Recommended siren and light combo that I can trigger via alarm output on cam or NVR?

I don't see how this setup will work. The siren, from my research, is 12v DC and the switch's output is 120v AC. I'm currently also looking for a siren setup. http://www.xantech.com/files/manuals/19_AC1.pdf https://www.pottersignal.com/product/datasheet/8880143_SSX-52Series.pdf

    Linux on VMS

Oh, no, no, no. My i7 Hackintosh with Dell's U3415W is the surfing machine. I plan on getting a Skylake i5, used PC MT for the VMS. I will spend more time reading about DW.

    Linux on VMS

I haven't figured that out yet. I still have to figure out the degrees of coverage but it looks like 4 with cameras looking at each other in addition to the scene.

    Linux on VMS

I didn't intend to use the PC for surfing, only for VMS. I have an i7 6700K Hackintosh and want to stay off Microsoft as much as possible. I'll put 10 Pro back on the list.

    Linux on VMS

Perhaps "robust" was not the correct word. I guess I'm concerned with attacks to Windows 10, ex; viruses, malware and hacking, etc., that will require more attention.
  21. Mikentosh2017

    Linux on VMS

I think Linux will be more difficult to configure but Linux is supposed to be more robust. Fenderman has mentioned 2 of these but I'm wondering about the other 2. Wavestore exacqVision Professional DW Spectrum® IPVMS Nx Witness What say you?

    Hikvision NVR with 8TB/10TB HDDs

What you said about Microsoft reminds me why I've been off of them for 11 years. Now I'm wondering about VMS on Linux.

    Quick question..

Both, but the best is to run it in the attic and drop down between walls. If you drop the line on an outside wall, someone can chop it with a machete.
  24. Mikentosh2017

    Quick question..

    Conduit not necessary.
  25. Mikentosh2017

    Quick question..

Your cable is too short? What system do you have? So run cable along soffit until you get to the wall that's nearest the next cable connection. Then from attic, go down between studs to your NVR/POE switch. You will have to drill/notch the between-stud fire block.

    Hikvision NVR with 8TB/10TB HDDs

Yeah, I can see that. I found a video to support what you say. I'm not sure if this forum allows it.

    Hikvision NVR with 8TB/10TB HDDs

VMS requires more manpower than a NVR? Can you explain?

    Hikvision NVR with 8TB/10TB HDDs

You probably should consider a PC.
