I have a couple 2.8mm turrets coming, also the FOV on my 2.8mm dome seems much much wider than 90* based on location of a building in the FOV on the camera.
The wider the better I prefer.

Is that with just the IR from the camera? Big hotspot from the IR?
It may be because I have it pointed towards the ground. I also have 5 other IP cameras back there. I need to move the camera to a different location to check out the IR range. I noticed that turning on BLC mode lightens the area considerably more.

Few days ago I have received these cameras. I have it with two diferent lenses 2.8mm and 3.6mm. Cameras with 2.8mm lens manufactured two months later and have newer firmware than cameras with 3.6mm lens (firmware 2.400.0000.10.R 2015-06-18 vs 2.400.0000.7.R 2015-04-22). And this new firmware has higher maximum resolution of 2688*1520 (vs 2560*1440 in older firmware). So its true 4Mp not 3.7Mp

If you want to get this higher resolution ask you sellers to send you newer firmware.

This sounds very nice. I am asking CCTV CAMERA CHINA if they can send me the newer firmware. Both my turrets and the dome are on 2.400.0000.6.R, build : 2015-04-09 and have a max resolution of 2560 x 1440.

Though I really wonder if maybe Dahua really has a higher resolution sensor in there or not. Maybe they just decided to upscale the video a little to compete with Hikvision's 4MP resolution? Chinese logic, right? I would like to have more faith in Dahua than that.

In this 10.R firmware you can select both 2560*1440 and 2688*1520 resolutions. And in 2688*1520 you'll have a wider angle of view so I think that it has true 4Mp sensor

I asked that seller if they would provide firmware about a month ago and was told they couldn't help me with FW.

I thought I had found that firmware, but nope.

I looked at the place linked here: http://www.ipcamtalk.com/showthread.php/4502-Dahua-Firmware

These new 4mp cams are not mentioned in any of the firmware list spreadsheets to date, but the directory IPC-HX4(2)X2X/ kind of matches the model numbers and it contains a firmware that looks like the exact version and date stamp you mention, but it won't load on the camera :(

I think this is because it is different language firmware. You can load it using NCOM+TFTP but I think it will not work on chinese camera...

Hi Larebear, any further experimenting with WDR and or moving the cameras to a different location to assess the PQ/VQ at night?

Has anyone with one of these cameras been able to telnet into the camera? Port 23 is open on my camera, but an attempt to connect using PuTTY gets "Connection closed by remote host"

I might move the camera to a new temporary location today away from the fence and tree's. It's been mostly cloudy here the last few days, so will try the WDR on a sunny day with some shadows. It doesn't look very good with it turned on when it's cloudy.

I moved the camera to a new temporary location. Here are a couple of snapshots, first one with WDR off and second with WDR on and set to the default 50. Finally got some sunshine today. Will post another capture later tonight. Camera has 2.8mm lens.

WDR Off

WDR On (50)

Your results look very similar to mine. I've tried WDR at 25, 50, and 75, and haven't seen much difference. I'm not a big fan of the washed out colors, and brownish tint that WDR gives, but it really does a pretty good job of pulling detail out of the dark shadows.

Have you tried adjusting the brightness and contrast to compensate for the wdr?

Bumping up the contrast seems to make the colors a bit more natural, but it also makes the shadows darker again. I'll have to do more testing on a more brightly lit day, and in an area where I have more shadows than where I have the camera at the moment, before I'll be able to say whether or not it reduces the detail in the shadows.

I don't care much for the washed out colors either. Makes it look like the contrast is turned down too low. It might be OK in an area where there are shadows or shade most of the time, such as a front door or under a carport. There isn't that much shade around here, so I'll most likely leave it turned off.

I also have played with brightness and contrast when WDR is turned on and it does help.

The range of those two comparisons is widely different.

I also find (Hikvision, Dahua and other brands) that they all need their settings tweaked to get the best at night.

Also, your daytime pics look like you are turning on Digital WDR. True WDR won't make images anywhere near that dark compared to WDR being off.
