Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Does anyone have a reliable source for new old stock ( intl version) ipc-hdw5231r-z? I know Andy has sold out on these since manufacturing stopped a few months back.

I prefer the white Z face over the black ZE face.

If you don't need audio (and only need one 1080p stream), the 2231R-Z looks the same (white face).

Hey Guys
I went and grabbed new firmware for a few cameras.
I started out with the camera that would least worry me if I lost the camera configs.
The HDW5231R-Z has not been updated since I purchased from Andy ~12mths ago.
Firmware upgrade went smoothly. I (exported) backed up the configs, prior to update, now after firmware update when I try to import them via web UI I get operation failed message.
I have tried importing file using various browsers, is there any way to get the configs back? or is it a case of if it aint broke........

Any tips, help or advice appreciated!

I have ran into this on other Dahua models. I get that error, but it actually does import the settings. You might check and see if it did.

Thanks Tinman. I tried 3 different F/W versions including the original F/W and they failed to import. I checked to see if the settings actually imported on each, but they didn't stick. It won't take too long on this camera to change all the settings manually.

Yes, now all move to IPC-HDW5231R-ZE, sliver color and black color.
Black color just get some stock in.

I like to set them back to factory defaults after upgrading, then manually enter the settings.

Totally agree factory reset is best practice after a firmware upgrade/downgrade.
How do you remember/save all the settings for each individual camera? I use Snagit to store a heap of screenshots in sequential order. Is there a better method?

Worst case, do it the old fashioned way, a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil. Typically you're probably only changing a few things anyway.

@nayr I have been reading with interest your reviews of this camera. I'm wondering if you still rate this camera in 2018 or is there a better newer model? It often seems that newer cameras are only slight updates. I just want a single camera for outside my house.
@nayr went offline a year or so ago, at least from here. This exact model is no longer being manufactured, having been replaced by the 5231R-ZE (which has a review thread similar to this one). If you don't need audio (or the need to stream two hi-res streams simultaneously), there is a now less expensive model (2231).

Since this thread came out, Dahua has introduced a bunch of different sized/featured Starlight models. As for technology newer than Starlight, Dahua has released some cameras that stay in color mode all of the time (Starlights switch to B/W when it gets dark enough outside), but so far I haven't been any varifocal (or turret) models yet.

If you haven't already, def. check some of the other review threads in the Dahua sub-forum here!

@aristobrat thanks for posting. the Dahua cameras are a bit of a minefield, as there are so many different models. I'm just after something basic with a good picture both night and day.

Gotcha.

If I had to guess, I'd say the current version of this camera is probably still the most popular:
Review-Dahua Starlight IPC-HDW5231R-ZE 800 meter capable ePOE

... with the less-expensive version of it gaining popularity:
Review-Dahua IPC-HDW2231RP-ZS Starlight Camera-Varifocal

Both are Starlight models, which are the Dahua models that do the best at night. Both are also varifocal turrets, like the model this thread is based on. Turrets are still the most recommended types for outdoors, and varifocals make it great for being able to set the zoom for exactly how wide your image is.

@looney2ns thanks, I hadn't noticed the cliff notes, lots of useful stuff there. I currently have some software called motioneyeOS ccrisan/motioneyeos running on my Raspberrypi and I was hoping I could use this with the Dahua camera. But a quick search of this forum I only found one other post which mentions this software. As far as I can tell it should work, but wondering what alternatives there are apart from blue iris as I run macs. I really don't want to order a camera from china only to find that it's not going to work with my preferred software.

Does that software support RTSP streams? If so, Dahua cam should work.
