One difference I saw in the documentation when making the choice to purchase was that the 7816 is rated for 6MP cameras and 100Mbps camera traffic inbound vs 80Mbps for the 7616.

I would speculate that the 7816 has a slightly faster processor. Every little helps!
On the 3.0.8 firmware there is no 'Virtual Host'. There is just released 3.0.10 firmware on the Chinese Hikvision site which presumably has new / improved features, but the 7816 rejects this, I think it's a language mismatch.
I've yet to find another source for the English version, unless anyone in this community can advise!

Out of curiosity - where did you see the item on sale?

It would be interesting if someone with a 7616 could provide a comparison with this:

That's the same seller that I purchased my DS-7816N-E2/8P from. A good price.
And I have 3 Hikvision cameras currently on order from them - 2032, 2132 and 2432.

The shipment was via TNT economy.
Ordered 19th October, delivered 28th. The seller shipped the same day, from what I remember.

Are these 7816 units still running ok, and in English? The 7816 model with no PoE is perfect for my needs, but just need some reassurance before I click the button to buy.

It would be teamed up with 3 Hikvision 3MP cameras from Aliexpress (CCTV Camera China), running v5.2.5 multi-language.

My 7816 has been 100% reliable since it was powered on in October. It was powered down once when I moved it from its setup location to its finished location.
Its fully English - though I am still using the original 3.0.8 firmware, I haven't upgraded to 3,0.10 or 3.2.1
I have 8 cameras connected, all 5 Hikvision cameras that are connected are running the 5.2.0 firmware.
Also I am pulling 1080p video streams off 3 of the PoE connected cameras with QNAP Surveillance Station - the motion detection timeline is a little better there as it highlights motion detections in red.

The dual-core processor is not stressed with that camera load, so I can add more in future:

CPU0: 0.3% usr 4.5% sys 0.0% nic 85.4% idle 0.0% io 0.0% irq 9.5% sirq
CPU1: 0.5% usr 2.1% sys 0.0% nic 96.4% idle 0.7% io 0.0% irq 0.0% sirq
Load average: 36.78 43.10 44.22 3/236 5131
PID PPID USER STAT VSZ %MEM CPU %CPU COMMAND
908 1 root S 1216m236.7 0 7.2 [hicore]
1416 2 root RW 0 0.0 0 1.1 [HI_VFMW_VideoDe]
1190 2 root SW 0 0.0 1 0.1 [kworker/u:0]
4616 4499 root R 1200 0.2 0 0.0 [top]
I would like to upgrade to the 3.2.1 firmware as DaveP has done - and get the enhanced event support - but I may just buy another one to experiment with first.

Thanks Alastair. I tried contacting the seller on chat to ask if it was an English version, and which firmware it would ship with but I think they'd clocked off for the day and left chat open.

Sounds promising, especially at less than 190 USD.

I too have a QNAP, but I use that as a dedicated music drive as it's pretty slow - one of the fanless designs.

I upgraded from a 7608NI-SE to the 7816N-E2 (both non-POE), and could not be happier, the 7816 was cheaper ($178). Main reason was for more bandwidth I can now run all 7 cams at full quality, also the added VCA alarm function enables the smart features like line crossing, face detection and intrusion.

I got mine here for $178 with shipping through DHL in about a week

Hey Guys-

New guy here. Currently running Blue Iris on three different PC systems with no NVR's. Getting into HIKVISION cameras now and thinking of getting a NVR.

I have an extra Cisco POE switch....would the 7816N-E2 be a good option for me? Planning on running 6 HIKVISION 2332's roughly.

Thanks

The NVR's are great for basic recording...however, if you are using blue iris's scheduling and alert options you will find the NVR's to be severely lacking.

Thanks Fenderman.

Is there a good consensus on which NVR I should start with? (For 6 ish cameras)

I already have 24 port Linksys POE switch and another TP-Link Poe switch.

If you have a switch look for an nvr that does not have poe ports...it will be quieter...I havent been following the model changes so i cannot give you a direct recommendation.

Sorry, I don't believe that is correct. Though it may depend very much on the product type suffix, not just the product number:

Alastair, I won't question the reliability of your NVR, but those load averages are horrible. I can't believe that thing is running well at all. Normally the simple review of load average is 1.00 for every CPU, with the ability to average N+1 as your ceiling. Obviously 1 min averages are going to spike above this, but if a 15 min average is above N+1 routinely, something is normally wrong.

The "something wrong" could be anything between poor application coding to slow disk speed. Since it is a low CPU utilization that typically means there are lots of processes waiting to use the CPU, but once they get there their task is not CPU intensive. This usually points to other IO being the problem. It could be that the NICs in these are offloading a lot of packet processing to the CPU or that the disk subsystem is writing slower than the processes needing to write are stacking up.

Anyway, without actually having access to one of these I can't tell what is going on. It would be interesting to know, but it sounds like it is working for you.

Are these NVRs recording continuously or are they recording on events? Are the events determined by the camera or is the NVR doing event monitoring and then initiating the recording. Does anyone know if the NVR can be used to initiate a local recording to the SD card in a camera instead of bringing it back to the NVR? Edge storage is the new thing on higher end cameras, I would be interested if the lower end devices started supporting it.
