DMSS App: Motion Events don’t always display the Thumbnail

I'm far from an expert so lets get that out of the way ;) But i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once (maybe to old of humor for some)

I cant screenshot everything to teach you how to use the app. It would take many hours and though I'm retired you couldn't afford me.

I will say based on your posts that the problem isn't likely your App.
Working fine during day and not so good at night tells me your event rules/triggers (MD or IVS or SMD) are not set up well/correctly for nighttime and low light.
If it works even sometimes at night, its not typically an APP or recording schedule problem.

Version - in order

There's hours of video available. You;ll need to roll up your sleeves and get dirty like the rest of us. Here's two to get you satrted

See if you can login to the NVR web Interface using a computer and browser, probably at the default address 192.168.1.108

If you can, we can at least see what event triggers are setup and give your "engineer" some direction on where to go to fix it

what version of DMSS do you have?
Your engineer is full of shit if he says you can’t connect your NVR via local LAN Ip

Thanks - You're a life saver - I just logged-out of my account and was then able to connect over IP, and all the thumbnails are working GREAT :) ... Not sure why I'd want to connect any other way, because I have a static iP so can connect whilst away as well. It did say you lose your alarm messages when you close the app, but I tested this and my messages remained, unless it means when / if you ever log-out, but I am fine with this, as never log-out anyway..

Thanks for your prompt... I should have looked at this earlier, explains why the older apps were working :) !!

yes if you logout you lose them.

I dont think that will solve your "away from home" remote access issues though. If you mean port forwarding your house WAN/external IP, yeah it will work until you get hacked.

I setup two separate profiles in DMSS (just treat them as separate NVRs).
1- Local IP just like you have now for when I'm home on my wifi
2- A second profile using the Serial Number and P2P enabled on the NVR for remote access when I'm away

I leave P2P enabled on the NVR all the time but I only access the cameras remotely via the P2P profile when I'm away. As you saw, relying solely on the P2P connection, while home on your LAN, can produce various not good results.

if you can get that working, then shut off any port forwarding in your router.

Thanks. I have VPN connection set-up at home, so can access my local IP devices when its enabled on my phone etc, so that provides a secure connection without the neeed of port forwarding, and saves having two profiles.

I have noticed a couple of timing event differences between local IP connected DMSS app, and through the P2P enabled version - It seems the P2P enabled method is slightly better at capturing the motion events even know both receive the notifications at the same time , I’ve only noticed 1 or 2 event drops-outs on the local ip connected version.. which is odd, so I guess the other route provides more constant/ reliable connectivity even know it drop thumbnails lol - I will continue to monitor both solutions.. but ever-way, I think this works for me for the time being :)

Which camera Model Do you have?
Hi My cameras are all DH-IPC-HDW3849H-AS-PV and the NVR is NVR4108HS-8P-EI-6TB. I still find its random with thumbnails working better in low light (for some reason). I have found a few alternative apps, and find its apple to capture the thumbnail correctly, but it would have been nice to have it working properly on the DMSS app. It also works on DMSS app if you connect directly to the NVR over IP instead of P2P, but you lose the messages when app is locked when using IP connection only.. I have since got my cameras working with apple homekit, so use this as my quick go to app for viewing feeds / motion video events, and use the DMSS app as and when I want more detail or to look back further etc.. thanks

Which alternative app you found?
I have round ‘EasyViewer Plus’ is better at displaying the thumbnails for motion events, but the thumbnails are really small, so whilst it displays them correctly, it’s not easy to see them lol … This is why i set-up apple HomeKit , connecting my camera through the ‘Homebridge’ service that you can run on a Synology NAS, or Windows, or RasperberryPI .. This enables you to connect your cameras to HomeKit and utilise the motion event triggers there. I now use this as my go to for quick viewing of events, and revert to the DMSS app as and when required… The ‘SCRYPTED’ docker app also works well as an alternative to homebridge, but I think Homebridge is easier to setup.. HOpe this helps

How did you configure to use with HomeKit? I am really keen to use HomeKit.

Hi, There are a few ways to get this working, using either Homebridge or SCRYPTED. I think both are good, but for me, I have chosen Homebridge in the main for its simplicity, but do have both running for different reasons, but most of my HomeKit devices connect through Homebridge to HomeKit. For this to work, your need to either run Homebridge on a Windows platform, NAS, or purchase a Raspberry Pi. I own a Synology NAS that runs 24x7, so it's the perfect home for Homebridge. There are lots of videos on YouTube on how to configure Homebridge on any of the devices, so worth taking a look at these first... Once installed, you simply load-in the Plug-in you need for those devices you want to connect to HomeKit: There are many plugin-in, such as Homebridge Camera UI (works for cameras including Dahua), Ring, Alexa , etc.. and more

Hope this helps

I had the same issue with DMSS when connecting to my NVR via P2P, but everything works fine in local IP mode. I’m pretty sure the problem isn’t with the NVR or camera settings. It seems like the DMSS app occasionally doesn’t receive the snapshot packets, maybe because of network issues or the image size being too big. And since there’s no retry mechanism, the snapshots just fail if something goes wrong.

To get around this, I set up Tailscale on my NAS, which lets me access my local subnet (192.168.1.0/24) from anywhere. My phone stays connected to the same Tailscale network all the time, so local IP mode works perfectly even when I’m not at home. Plus, Tailscale is super easy to set up, secure (it uses WireGuard), and handles all the tricky stuff like NAT traversal automatically.
