Is this the most logical server to build?

wow those MT's right now are like $1100-1200 on ebay. thats pretty new tech.

So check this out, The core i7-8700 has 6 cores with 12 threads, and the i7- 9700 has 8 cores and 8 threads. I wonder how they benchmark against each other?

oh, same era,,,,the Dell XPS 8930 has a 460 Watt PSU, and 3 drive bays and 4 Sata ports on board. As well as an NVME m.2 slot onboard. with the i7-8700. that would occupy almost the same footprint as an Optioplex MT.

Is anybody able to tell if a guy could slip a 3.5" drive into those open bays? Dell XPS 8930. I actually kinda like this tower. Either way, it seems roomier than the Optiplex. If a guy really really wanted a 2nd surveilance drive It looks like you could get creative.

I see plenty of room with some duct tape or velcro LOL (although cannot tell if the mobo has the connection points for additional)
has 4 sata connectors on Mobo. 1 might get disabled by virtue of running an m.2 SSD onboard?

I guess if its a Configure to Order ( CTO) perhaps there are 3 PSU options? or maybe it matters how many options you add on to the base machine?

Wow that looks promising. I wonder what power supply it comes with. Definitely going to have to look into this.
460 Standard. 460w Bronze and 850W available.

ok so this has a similar form factor. and came in both the 8700 and 9700 flavors. but it has the nicer Speed bays, or Tooless HDD bays. and the price was a bit lower. and this model is usually by default installed with the Pro version of Windows. whereas the XPS8930 typically ships with the Home OS.

Plus the serial port for maybe interfacing with a enterprise grade device. Bluetooth audio is more likely to be standard on XPS. haven't researched bluetooth audio on the precision 3630 yet.

Don't worry about the OS. There's always other ways of getting a fresh copy.

as for the different xps versions. Could you tell me how much going from a i7 8700 to a i7 9700 will effect my performance? I know the difference is 2 more physical, loss of hyperthreading and a newer generation but what does that convert into performance that I will see?
Remember I plan to use: Blue Iris with quick sync for 16 cameras ~128MP, deep stack with a gpu, plex with quick sync, and possibly some light game server hosting and some virtualization.

Also is this a better deal than this?(Comes with a 1080)

First link has a great seller reputation. sometimes its not about the best $ but who will respond if there is an issue.
DO NOT BUY from the seller in the second link!!!! He has 61 negative reviews. I don't buy from bulk sellers that are too big for thier britches" I will buy from bulk seller that has a better seller rating.
You gotta research the sellers along with the product.
Some of these XPS systems have guys with 1 transaction! Do NOt buy. They made a new username after they fucked enough people under the old username.

Do you think it's better to wait a couple of months for the prices to drop down or buy now? I won't be using the systems for another 8-10 months as my house is being built.

Maybe just a little bit. Keep researching the products your interested in, and get short list of acceptable sellers with good ratings.
then when your ready you can confidentally buy.
You know, .... it's all your fault that last nite I ended up buying the 3630 Dell Precision Tower LOL. with an i7-8700 and 32 Gb ram. it uses a Full On Powersupply, and has 3 motherfucking 3.5" HDD bays just like the 8930 XPS.
If you move into the 8940, they drop the 3.5" HDD bays in favor of 2.5" bays. So the 8930 is the Sweetspot for running multiple WD Purp Surveillance drives.
Things may not go in the cheaper direction with Ukraine n shit.
I'd get a XPS 8930 sooner than later, and get BI installed. Maybe you can play around with the system while you wait?

I built a mini tower last year around an 15-10400. It runs Blue Iris, Plex and my home automation program (HomeSeer) as well as VMWare workstation with 3 additional Win10 VM's for downloads, and other things. I originally installed the 12 TB drive in the case but ended up getting a Synology 6 Bay nas and I store my video clips on it. The mini tower uses about 45 watts 24/7 and the 6 bay (60 TB of storage) runs around 60 watts. I am in S Cal and the cost of electricity is ridiculous. I replaced my old SuperMicro tower from 2016 which was burning through 200 watts an hour :(. So far the mini tower with the nas has worked out great If you need more horse power, the i5-10600 scores 14,034
