Let your router assign you a ip dhcp but once it does reserve it in your router so it won't change .

Only the router will assign a ip if it's dhcp. A switch won't it's different

What router do you have ?

Also start thinking about having your security cameras on a second network with a vpn

I went with a Win 10 PC solution because I liked BI the best. BI normally uses around 25% cpu supporting 4 cams.

Since CPU wasn't an issue, I also installed HomeSeer for automation and security. They play really nice together. And Win 10 is very solid.

I couldn't be happier (unless I could add more automation devices).
 
3 camera's up. Second cat 6a cable terminated and camera booted right up. It address and password changed on the 3 up. Assigned that ip address to those camera's and renamed them in the router.

Questions Will the managed hub interfere with the router or not?

Should I use ipv6 over the ipv4?

I have 2 drives in my computer. One the OS is running on. The 2nd BI is recording to. Seems I have everything pointed to the correct drive.

you are definitely not using direct to disk and hardware acceleration...you numbers will be in the single digits. (must be using the licensed version and not remoting in via a remote desktop app)
 
I thought I setup direct to disk. It is the licensed version. I'm in over my head with settings but will figure it out. It is writing to the WD Purple drive. My saved videos are located there.

Are you remoting in? otherwise you did not setup direct to disk...look at the help file
 
I'm at the tinkering stage trying to figure out what does what. What's the best settings, etc. I hope to get up at least 3 or possibly all 4 tomorrow. Weather will be perfect.

I am curious about the "best practices" for using shielded cat 6 cable. @nayr point about the plastic plug on the camera negating the ground is a good one. But if one has gone to the trouble of using STP, it does seem a grounded connector would be a good idea? Even if you only get ground on one end of the cable, you should get some shielding. I just bought a roll of this stuff unseen and it is a lot stiffer and larger making it less fun to work with. But since I have it I am looking for shielded connectors. Interested in thoughts!
 
as long as one end is grounded it will provide shielding, if not then it really wont do much.. but when mounting electronics on the outside of the house its not a bad idea to ground the chassis.. many security cameras have a small screw for grounding somewhere.

ideally it'd go through a lightning arrestor before going into your network, but given most power bricks for switches are 2 prongs and generate there own ground not connected to the common ground of the house, just plugging in a STP cable into a switch wont automatically give you an earth ground.. most switches will have a grounding screw on the chassis too, and if thats left floating then your not shielding anything from EMI.

in other words, Foil lining your hat wont work as well if your floating in the air.. ;)

Deep subject. In short, it depends on what you want to achieve. eg:
a) keep electrical noise (emissions) from radiating out from the cable. Important in low-noise applications (which yours isn't)
b) keep electrical noise from reaching in to the conductors. Important in a noisy environment, like near flourescent lighting, motors, or running in parallel with AC lines.
c) Providing a chassis ground (different than logic ground or circuit ground). This requires connecting the shield at both ends.

For a & b, often connecting shield at one end or the other will give best results. If both ends are grounded, then small ground currents on the shield can increase radiation or susceptibility.

A shielded cable that doesn't have shield tied to ground at either end usually performs worse than unshielded cable.
Almost every situation is different when emissions or susceptibility are involved.

NoloC asked about "best practices". In your case, houndog, you're not getting into critical territory.

The female RJ45 on the camera pigtail is the "unshielded" variety. Even if you terminated the Monoprice Cat 6 cable with a shielded RJ45, which uses a metal shell around the plastic RJ45, it wouldn't connect the shield to the camera.

Shielded RJ45 connectors are a pain.

You terminated your own Cat6 cable, and then it didn't work. And then we got to discussing shield and drain. The root problem is terminating a cable so it works. That has nothing to do with shielding.

I don't use shielded Cat cables at home, only at work. We made cameras and NVRs for mounting in armored suburbans used by the DoD in the "Stans". (Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, etc). The suburbans had sensitive ECM equipment (Electronic Counter Measures). The ECM would pick up radio signals, IED radios, even someone walking with a cell phone. So my camera and NVR had to be VERY quiet, ie: lower emissions than FCC class B (and way less than class A). It was tricky.

So hound dog 911 and NoloC, don't sweat the shield....

Two up and running outside. The backside of my house is just so low it was really difficult to put one in a location that couldn't be vandalized. Hopefully the last two goes in without a hitch. Neighbors were being themselves today. The old lady talks like she was a sailor. Her pit bull bit her in the ass today. I will buy at least 2 more cameras soon!
