One thing a detective told me last month when I had some footage to give them when they were canvasing after a shooting down the street- let them come to you always for anything you have to give them. It makes it official in the report and avoids you having to show up in court. They send out two detectives (standard) to your home and THEY archive the footage from your system to THEIR thumb drive. The detective that showed up to get my footage knew his way around my dvr better than I did lol. It's been that long since I've had to archive lol. But to cover your back, don't be accommodating as might be your nature (as is mine), request they come to you and pull any footage they need themselves.

Detectives or not, you would let someone in your home and insert some UNKNOWN thumb drive in your system?? Let alone let them dink with your PC. Are you kidding me! Either you tell them how they are going to get video or pound sand is what I would tell them.
Here is what I have done in the past. I buy cheap USB drives off Amazon. If an incident happen I dump the footage in that USB and LEO can have that USB.
I do the same. I provide them the thumb drive with all relevant video and a written timeline if needed with multiple cameras so they can sort it out easier.

These folks retrieve cctv video every day. I didn't mind them coming in a popping a thumb drive in and retrieving the backups AT ALL. I watched him and the time stamps were a known beforehand. You pound the sand over that- expect to show up in court and testify at trial. I fail to see the paranoia over them doing the archive.

I've never had anything more than a beat cop, or an occasional detective show up. here they even have Citizen patrol come by to take a report. None of those folks knew their way around an NVR. Its not like they sent a CSI team for vehicular burglary. I suppose it differs with the crime and area.

Agree or open some sort of backdoor... Why take the risk when the USB are so cheap. Also The chances of that happening are probably pretty low but again why take the chance when you can always buy USB drives so cheap.
Thumb drives are notorious for spreading viruses. A lot of detectives are probably technically challenged and use what ever thumb drive they have, like the ones they confiscated from some nit wit that has plenty of viruses. Do NOT ever let anyone insert unknown thumb drives in your system, unless you do not care about malware/virus.
Maybe a PC/Mac with BI there could be concern but an NVR or DVR, no worries. In NY perhaps it's a bit different. I think they might have been a bit more concerned because this was a serious drug related shooting. No problem showing up at a cartel drug trial? Hey, go for it. You're better man than I. I have no problems handing over footage but I prefer to remain out of the proceedings however possible.

Hmmm... I guess the best is to clone your HDD before they show up and then set it aside and swap it out when they are done? or use a 2nd burner system...

That is what I do. I also give the USB drives to my neighbors if they want a copy of something that happened to them. I ordered 10 more a couple of days ago and they just came in this afternoon. Not that I think there is a concern, but nvr's are actually more susceptible to malware because there is no antivirus. If you think that an nvr or dvr cannot be infected, you are mistaken.
Took them long enough. The truck did have a club. Got the license plate of the thief's car from my license plate cameras. The camera is my 4K Dahua PTZ with the 4/3" sensor. It makes things look lighter than it actually is. I am not sure if there are two or three people involved. I need to study this more with the car's doors opening and closing. The car has tinted windows so my other cameras could not see inside especially in the dark.
I agree. Each of us have to decide how we handle our situation given all of the parameters that apply to us. Where we live and the laws of that jurisdiction, the specific crime involved, what our videos actually show, our own comfort level with having strangers (even if they are LEOs) in our homes and touching our equipment, and other factors will all enter into what each of us decide to do.
I respect the technical opinions of each of you that have responded to this part of the thread and I will do what I feel comfortable with in my specific situation. I hope that each of you think along the same lines.
