New computer needed for Blue Iris

My brother delivered the new Blue Iris machine today: Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF - i7-6700 Quad - 8GB RAM - 128GB SSD- Win 10 PRO

It is really snappy so far, I like windows 10. Came with a keyboard and mouse

1. I changed the Bios to restart automatically after a power failure, works
2. CPU is at 60%, recording one 4mp camera, will need to look into direct to disk and a BI setup tutorial
3. I put Blue Iris into the Starup folder after the username, but after a restart the app is not opening up automatically still?

you also need to enter the license key for direct to disk to work...hardware acceleration needs to be enabled
I would suggested doing a clean install of windows using Microsoft media creation tool
simply placing it in the startup folder wont work..there are a bunch of threads explaining how to do this using task scheduler, or better yet since it will be remote, run it as a service...

that and any crap dell installed...for example, to install intel hd drivers from intel you need to use a workaround because the dell installation will not accept them...it will take exactly 15 minuets to do...all you need is a spare 8gb usb stick

FYI to others, there is an easy app you can install that exports your windows product key so you can email it to yourself, but this process above did not ever require me to enter it during the clean install.

with windows 10 you dont need any key...once it is activated on a system, microsoft keeps specific system data and you can install with no key.

Thank you guys. I just got nervous to redo the operating system and get stuck without a product key. But just like you said it did not ask for it. Worked like a charm. Thank you for the suggestion to redo it now and not later.

Thanks. I too read the spec sheet with the error. So if i understand u correctly, the HP elitedesk 800 G2 SFF can accommodate one 3.5 inch drive AND one 2.5 inch drive?

The Dell optiplex 3040/5040/7040 SFF can accommodate only one 3.5 OR 2.5 drive. So one would have to get innovate and either remove the ODD and stick it in there or velcro the second drive

That would be one benefit of the HP SFF vs the Dell.

With respect to the elitedesk yes...with the caveat that there are caddys available that will allow you to add a 2.5 drive instead of the dvd...
I believe the reason why the spec sheet says 2x3.5 is because they are referring to a 3.5 slot available for a mutimedia card reader...a 3.5 drive will slide in but will not be secure...you cannot simply velcro a mechanical drive...the excessive vibrations will kill it..
With respect to dell...the sff 5040/7040 have m.2 slots (not 3040) which will allow you to add an ssd..

Thank you for clarifying. My plan is to have an 128/256 GB SSD for OS and software and data in 4 or 6Tb purple HDD. So if I just bought the above 800 G2 HP elitedesk SFF, i would not be able to place both a 3.5 HDD and a 2.5 SSD without removing the optical drive. In that case, it isnt very different from the dell optiplex SFF, which has the exact same issue. For some reason i earlier misunderstood that the HPs had greater capacity of drives that the dells (may be that reference was only for the tower models).

As far as velcro, that was referencing someone else in a thread before..if I had followed that, i would have velcroed the SSD only.

Lastly, yes i noted that the 5040 and 7040 have m.2. May be thats why the Ebay 3040 are a little cheaper. The issue is that most refurbished SFF models that are sold with the SSD, have it in SATA form. So that would go waste if I had to put a WD purple HDD and a m.2 SSD.

Bottom line, both HP and Dell SFF can be used with modifications, but are not immediately ready to fit 2 drives

You can place a 2.5 AND 3.5 without removing the optical drive...if you remove the optical drive and buy a caddy you can have 2x2.5 and one 3.5..

One more follow up question. Am i correct from reading from HP outlet's site that refurbished HP elitedesk/prodesk desktops have a 1 year warranty (vs the three for new HPs) while the Dell refurbished have three years when bought from Dell outlet? Or am i missing something. Of course on ebay there may be some used Hps that have more than a year left on original warranty but I was thinking of the official manufacturer refurbished ones. thanks.
 
Read the site last week and that's my take. They make a decent machine. Recently bought a Dell laptop on Amazon for my business use, so far so good.

I always purchase the hp's from ebay...pricing is much better than via hp...dell on the other hand is often cheaper via outlet..You can check warranty via hp's website by asking the seller for the serial

I messaged the seller a few times for some details and was very responsive each instance. Last thing I asked was for the serial # and never got a reply. Very tempting with those specs, but not so sure now.

That's a good deal... likely has most of 3 year warranty left..
