Bare with me, I’m trying to understand your question “How is it that so many supposedly smart people think the US constitution defines a democracy?”. So, if my answer is way off base please let me know. If a Republic is a government of laws and the United States was formed as a Constitutional Republic, then doesn’t the Constitution define, not a democracy, but our Republic?
