Review - Dahua SD49225XA-HNR 2MP 25x Starlight + IR PTZ AI Camera with Deep IVS & SMD Plus

Wow. What a roller coaster ride of emotions! I've been reading for two days now. I am glad this camera seems to be back to "as advertised" although the workaround seems quite alright to me.

I pre-wired my new build home and need to get on the stick ordering cameras. I wish I'd known about the height of a cameras mounting beforehand, but I think I can make it work. If not, I'll just wire more!

Anyway, I just wanted to kick out a big thanks to those contributing to this forum. Both sides (questions and solutions). Reading through 5 months of posts has allowed me to see the vision of what is possible.

Hey @EMPIRETECANDY ... Gonna need one of these bad boys and 8 fixed cams. Will send dm as soon as I work through my mounting positions.

Here's a preview Pic!

Make sure you get some varifocal cameras so that you can place them next to your fixed cameras, for a zoomed in look for facial identification. One camera for overview and one zoomed in. Read this post.

You didn't know that ! :) Yes 60fps while not useful or recommended for all applications, is useful for those such as Face Detection / Video Metadata (Structuralization) etc. Can be useful for vehicle works such as fast vehicles across tight FOV etc for more frames in a limited environment. Just be careful in its use

This camera does 60fps :D

I didn't use that specification when settling for this beast, lol. Its definitely useful as you said especially for fast vehicles crossing a tight field of view. :thumb:

Several weeks ago i was testing the camera indoor, today i mounted it to it´s planned place in my garden.
Today i wonder where my smart plan/Deep IVS entry in menu is gone, does anyone have a hint?

Maybe i forgot something essential the last weeks i didn´t have my hands on the camera

I found my mistake, i enabled "smart codec" in the video section

Hey all, quick update. I'm testing the new FW released in beta for now to make sure no issues when uploading to this cam. Interesting that there have been some changes to the UI here as I list below in screen grabs. Will be testing this FW to see if this helps with the preset slip and will report back. Good news is bitrate remains intact, no reduction in this or in frame rate.

New AI Live Menu

This is what the AI Live Menu looks like so will overlay Video Metadata in a much more 2020 way :) Personally I like this layout and will test it with the 49225 and 59232

Lastly, IR has been relabelled to Illuminator

Hey Wildcat, where do we get the firmware once it is released? I'm on V2.800.107J000.0.T.P9.2522.UN.NR, Build Date: 2020-03-10

I'm completely unfamiliar with auto following cameras, can this one automatically zoom on license plates? And how good is it if I want to occasionally bird watch or view a nearby (within 1 mile) mountain?

And how does the spotter system work? Do you just use any camera as a spotter? And if so, how does it integrate?

@ArmoredDragon to be completely honest, if you are not sure what a PTZ is and in what situation to use it then you probably don't need one and can save some money :)

Now with regards to your specific questions, 1) no it won't automatically detect and zoom on license plates, it could detect a car (based on configuration, FOV, install location, rule setup etc) or person etc but again you would need to setup the cam to do this, these are not plug and play. For license plate captures you would be looking at an LPR or ANPR setup but this is not something for the faint of heart as it does take a lot of setup to get it right as myself and others have mentioned. Read some of these threads in the LPR sub-forum for more info on LPR/ANPR. 2) For successful bird/wildlife watching or scenic view you would need to carefully pair the lens of any camera (in this case PTZ) to the distance and target zone you wanted to view. Therefore this 25x lens on this 49225 may not be long enough depending on what you would like to view and where. The benefit that a PTZ WOULD give you with wildlife etc is that you could manually control Pan Tilt Zoom to follow an animal etc should you wish to do so.

With regards to Spotter vs Overwatch or PTZ activation / linkage from a fixed cam, you would need an NVR or equivalent SW platform to configure this, please review the forums and posts from myself and others on how to use.

Definitely read the excellent Cliff Notes as well.

Just got one of these from Andy... very thankful for this thread! You do an excellent job documenting the camera and its features so thank you!

I tried powering the camera with my standard POE router. It turns on, but once the IR lights came on, it appears to run out of power and reboots any time I try to use the PTZ. Does this cam require POE +? So far I have not found a clear answer.

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

YES this does need POE+

Just updated mine to the latest AUTO TRACKING firmware , I just need time to install it now :) I just want to mention that this new AT firmware has nothing to do with Andy. It is a Fully Authorised UK camera with a 3 year warranty from a fully Dahua Authorised dealer here in the UK.

With regards to the this camera with Auto Tracking we purchased from Andy, can we install new firmware as it comes out, or is the process different for the cameras with Auto Tracking?

For those purchased from Andy then Yes just reach out. The FW that first re-enabled Auto Tracking is 2020-03-10. Just do a regular upgrade once you get that file and you will be good to go.

Got the new firmware and autotracking works pretty well but it is a new learning curve for me. I am trying to understand the logic. Now, tripwires and intrusion boxes no longer have an option for sending the camera to a preset. It seems that when an event is triggered, the camera will attempt to track the object in the direction of the closest preset in the direction the object is traveling and goes to that preset. Sometimes it zooms, sometimes it doesn't. I also had instances of the camera picking up an object and starts to pan to the object and then in a flash, it goes back to the home position, like it was scared lol. I am glad I saved my cam config file so if things aren't as useful, I can go back to the firmware that allows Deep IVS to go to presets. I am definitely not giving up. It is exciting to have tracking that doesn't spin my camera like a top. Lots of testing to be done.
