A couple of months ago the media and forums were full of bragging how the economic sanctions against Russia were tanking its economy, a major indicator being the ruble losing value against other currencies. The tide has turned, and today the ruble is at a 2 year high against the US dollar. At the same time the euro is at a 5-1/2 year low against the US dollar. Right now, it looks like it's the EU that's getting creamed by the sanctions. Are the sanctions maybe a shoot one's self in the foot knee-jerk reaction?
Russia's economy isn't getting better with the war and sanctions .. factories shutting down due to supply chain issues now ..

As far as I can make out financially Russia is still doing pretty well with Europe reluctant to end their reliance on gas and the huge payments that go with it.

Saying that the current high interest rates, banking restrictions and trading blocks etc mean your average Joe in Russia is poorer by the day. The noose is slowly tightening and the general consensus is the currency is artificially inflated.

Doing a bit of browsing on this subject I can't help but think of a once successful company called Enron. Those of you in the US and old enough should know how that played out.

Here in the US and old enough to remember Nicholas at Barings Bank a few years prior to Enron :)
I forgot about that had to do a quick Google to remind myself lol.

The wiki says he's successful in the after dinner speech market. Putin could pimp himself out as such when this is all over. There'll be much need in China

Edit. Added link below

How's this for doublespeak? In the front of the story:
European Union countries will stop importing Russian oil and refined products.....
“We will phase out Russian supply of crude oil within six months and refined products by the end of the year,” ......“This will be a complete import ban on all Russian oil, seaborne and pipeline, crude and refined.”

Then further down:
There would still be exemptions for some countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, and natural gas has yet to be targeted with sanctions.

Complete, with exemptions. The politicians have redefined another word.
‘It will not be easy’: EU unveils plans to ban all Russian oil imports

Further to the above Hungary also has a veto on any proposals. See link

Pretty gruesome. The horrors of a war unfolding and at the minute unending. There will be more of this on both sides until Russia withdraws.

After some combatants were killed in another totally unrelated incident a long time ago I remember a thoughtful mother reflecting "they are somebody's sons"

They are all sons, daughters, husbands, wife's, fathers and mothers...they always have been. Putin attacked a sovereign nation, has killed untold amounts of civilians. I really don't care what happens to the invaders. If Ukraine wants to win, they need to get nasty, they need to be brutal and unrelenting. Of course, that is just my opinion.

Your opinion is as valuable mine :)

i have the benefit of sitting safely here in my home, thousands of miles away affording me a more philosophical outlook. A luxury in very short supply in Ukraine at the minute.

I agree and i think Ukraine need / will up the ante the longer this goes on.

In a previous post I outlined possible options as a reply

1 Russia always hides behind artillery. They have done this since the beginning of time and entirely predictable. When it starts coming back they will shit themselves. if Ukraine goes on the offensive it will decide when there is peace in Russia. This leads on to guerrilla warfare. Now the tactics are different - to advance slowly, the further into Russia territory the better result. They could randomly plant vans laden with explosives outside the Kremlin / government offices and other hotbeds of Nazi activity. To maintain support among the oppressed Russian people this could be done with a telephone warning to evacuate the area and keep civilian casualties to a minimum. There's Hundreds of miles of gas and oil lines and refineries exposed for the suitably inclined to take advantage. Railways, ports any factories with any links to the military and the staff therein could be legitimate targets.

It would be a role reversal. Russia would have to stay ahead and be right every single time. Guerrillas only need to be right sometime.

As the saying goes one man's freedom fighter is another's terrorist. Ukraine would need to be mindful and court public and media opinion. Something Moscow has been very poor at to date

Energy crisis - the structure of the moment

USA: 30% increase in gas prices in April and 18% over the past 3 days. Amid a record release of strategic oil stocks designed to lower the price of gasoline, gasoline prices resumed their growth and reached $4.2 per gallon

EU: 38% rise in energy prices in April. $1,079.5 per thousand cubic meters - gas futures in the EU at auction on Wednesday - according to data from the London ICE exchange

India: sharply increased supplies of Russian oil since February and increased them by 20% by today compared to the entire volume of purchases for the whole of 2021

China: 60% growth in gas supplies from the Russian Federation through the "Power of Siberia" since the beginning of the year. Independent refineries in China have increased purchases of Russian oil, state-owned companies PetroChina, Sinopec, Sinochem and CNOOC maintain current purchase volumes

Germany: German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said today that the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil by the EU will lead to a further increase in oil prices

Hungary: EU embargo on oil imports from Russia will destroy Hungary's economy, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said today

Slovakia: Slovak Ministry of Energy Karol Galek said today that the ban on Russian oil will destroy the economy

Latvia: firewood prices almost doubled compared to 2021, the price of 2 cubic meters rose to €220

EU: EU Permanent Representatives on Wednesday failed to reach an agreement on an embargo on Russian oil imports

OPEC: Cartel Secretary General said today that there is no free capacity to replace Russian oil in the world

And Russia has not yet begun to impose retaliatory sanctions.
