    Camera location adjustment

No need to run wire over brick over the two-bay garage door area. I can route it between house wall and brick in the garage attic so it's completely invisible just like the front door run. There is 4-5 inches of space between brick and house wall. The third garage is different because of the...

    Camera location adjustment

Hi all, I am finishing up a camera installation job that I should have done years ago. Several years ago, I used my IPC-HDW5231-Z cameras and placed one inside the garage about 7 feet high. The other two I installed in the front of the house on the eves. I couldn't figure out the front door...

    Broken HDW5231R-Z pigtail cable

I cut the pigtail head off and does look like I did sever the colored cables from inside the jacket as they came right out with no force. I sliced open and pulled the pigtail head apart where the soldered connections were. Can't really tell which wire gets soldered to what. Not sure how good my...

    Broken HDW5231R-Z pigtail cable

Hi there, I removed some cameras from a place I lived previously. When I remove one of the pigtails from the hole it was pushed into, I think I yanked it too hard and I realized it immediately since it felt like it kinda stretched out where the white cable connects to the pigtail connector...

Camera placement and installation questions on new residence (with pics)

I agree on the views seeing the tops of heads. Sometimes I can get decent facial recognition of delivery people if they are not looking at their feet as they approach. My options are limited on this all brick house. This is one reason why I want to build the next house -- running the wires at...

Camera placement and installation questions on new residence (with pics)

Hi there, I've been in a new house for months and during this time, I have been contemplating an installation of my IP cameras to get my Blue Iris server up and at it again. I have five Dahua Starlight IPC-HDW5231R-Z cameras that I took down from the house we sold last year and they've been...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Would've been cool to see someone do a flying jump kick through the glass on the back door, but I will keep it out of the picture because of that light. The backdoor is a glass french door; not very secure. I thought about hardening the front door however since it's a fiberglass flimsy piece of...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

I already installed sensors on every door and window and have motion detection inside and have an alarm service. I was thinking more along the lines of catching them in the act of breaking in not using the cameras as my primary alarm system. You do send alerts for motion detection events I...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Glad I did not drill any holes yet. I guessI was trying to get the door to see it get smashed in but the light is not helping.

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

awesome thanks. I am locating a point for a backyard cam. a wall mounted patio light in the picture causes the rest of the scene to kind of darken in the background at night. if the patio light is not in view this does not occur. is there a way to avoid this while that light is on?

The pfb203w housing worked out great. Only thing is the driveway cam faces west and gets some sun showering down on it in the afternoon. blanches the video slightly but still clear. Does the IP67 rating mean it can handle this especially in the hot texas summer?

Thanks j4co. I am going to order the PFB203W. Appreciate confirmation of compatibility and informative post.

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

So is the PFB203W just the older PFB204W and the PFA137 the older PFA139? Your link shows the earlier mounts so I guess they are compatible. I was looking at accessory sheet http://www1.dahuasecurity.com/download/Accessory_Selection_2017012314.pdf and the HDW5231R-Z is not even on there. I...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

You may be right and I am going to ask a structural engineer about it. Would prefer to drill a minimal hole to be on the safe side. I did not know the PFB204W is compatible and it looks kind of nice. Are these both good quality brackets? I see source for the PFB204W on amazon for less than $30.

My friend is a carpenter and says there is a load bearing beam right above the garage door and usually consists of 2x12s stacked together. My two door garage also has a center post between the doors which is also load bearing. Do you guys drill 3/4 inch holes through these beams (or post if you...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Great idea on the camera mount test. I need to make a long patch cable too. Is taking it apart and putting it back together relatively simple? Would like to know if there are bunch of loose parts that will fall out if I attempt this. O-ring getting dislodged could be bad for example. I suppose...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

I got five of these from Andy. Going through the installation process of getting cable and figuring out precise mounting points. Only thing I noticed testing them indoors was that one of them makes an audible motor noise when zooming out, and only zooming out, while the others are quiet. Is this...

    Camera placement advice

I am awaiting 5 Dahua hdw5231r-z cameras and have just ordered a PoE switch and Cat6 cable and other networking equipment. I have posted my house diagram with my proposed cam placement (yellow diamonds). Right now I am trying to get most of the front area of my house and the garage. The back I...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

I believe in running an ethernet cable to anything that is stationary (desktops, servers, cameras) and leaving wireless for devices that move (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.). I used to run wireless bridges across my house and ran into interference issues just doing video streaming and the...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

That's an awesome setup. Wish I had the room and proper HVAC for something like that. No basement, so my server closet is in a guest bedroom on a Lowes metal shelf, and people already don't like all the blinking lights if they sleep in there. It looks like patch panels will work fine with PoE by...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Right now I have keystone jacks to connect 3 rooms together for regular networking but that is obviously not going to scale for cameras. Did you buy a patch panel for all your cat 6 to terminate before going into your PoE switch? I was thinking of something like this to make it look better in my...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

So that NetGear prosafe switch is sufficient to power five - eight ipc-hdw5231r-z turret cameras? Any other models for up to 8 cameras? I actually have to put in orders for a PoE switch and cat 5e or cat 6 cable line ASAP. Since the cameras do not come close to saturating fast ethernet, is there...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

What's the best way to mount these? I ordered 5 but didn't get any junction boxes or anything. Can you mount horizontal (under eaves) and vertical (wood siding or stud/drywall)?

Brand new Blue Iris PC built, now need camera recommendations

Those LTS cameras do look nice and the warranty and support may justify the cost. I just put in an order of 5 IPC-HDW5231R-Z cameras with Andy. Looking forward to kicking off the project. It's not enough cameras which is why I will either have to buy more of these later or use some more...

Brand new Blue Iris PC built, now need camera recommendations

Thanks for the input on the cameras. I do have milkisbad's catalog and I am going through it but don't totally understand everything I see in there. Which varifocal models are you referring to? I see a varifocal camera listed at $199 (CMIP9723-S). The varifocal domes start at the price as and...

Brand new Blue Iris PC built, now need camera recommendations

I think I am going to start with 4-5 hdw5231r-z after I confirm I can get them. I have posted my house diagram with my proposed cam placement (yellow diamonds). I don't know if the hdw5231r-z is good as a front door cam or overkill. If the price is similar to other front door cams, then I may as...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Andy, Are you going to have enough to process 6 cams or so of this model? If I can't get this model, then I will have to fall back to something else. I DM'd you but got no reply. Thanks.
