I installed a H.VIEW 2mp turret system a few years ago, great in the day time but the nightvision was average at best. I recently purchased this 8MP system from Annke it seems to be a clone of the Hikvision 2385. I installed one camera last night and I need a good night image of outside our drive and the road opposite. Cars are a bit of a blur going past and sometimes people on the otherside of the road look like ghosts, it would be very difficult to identify anyone past our drive. I was expecting better from this, the reviews looked quite positive. They are supposed to have starlight mode for color nightvision, but I can't find that setting anywhere or any kind of exposure setting. Just checked now it's day and the day images are not great either, my 2MP was better.

Due to a spate of houses and cars being damaged I need a system with good nightvision, my budget is around £500-£600.

Day and NIght images from this Annke system.

With that camera, you are going to have trouble at night and have discovered why more MP is not better:
Image Sensor: 1/2.5"

You will need to add more light and increase the shutter speed to something like 1/60 or faster, but you are fighting the wrong sensor for night time. Hikvision has their Darkfighter series that would probably be better for your use, but I can't tell you how it will function on the Annke NVR.

Read the wiki and that should explain a lot.

FYI - for those wondering more about this kit. Looks like a Hikvision OEM kit.

@torchwood - the images, are those directly from the NVR / camera? or did you take a photo from the screem?

Also, do test the placement of the cameras. Remember to search here for the test rig many people use to test placements.

I took a photo of the screen, I think the NVR may be knackered as I noticed when I plugged it in there was a slight electrical burning smell, it's powered on with no issue still since last night though. Via the NVR or browser for the camera connected, I have no access to the options for exposure, day/night ect. I have just connected another cam directly to my router with a 12dc for power and I have access to various options I don't on the NVR. Seems to be a problem with the NVR, tried resetting it to no avail.

I don't think these are going to give me the kind of color night vision I need after all. I may be best buying the other system I think.

I really like the look of the ColorVu, I'm just a bit concerned at how bright the white leds will be as they will be placed at the front of the house. We do have a street light about 5M away right outside our drive that gives some light, so I'm wondering if they could be dialed right down or off and still give a good image. Iv'e posted a pic of out front now it's dark.

Hi @torchwood

"..4MP 4mm ColorVue with a 1/1.8 sensor .."

Members have been reviewing some Dahua OEM cameras that also have 4MP with the 1/1.8" sensors and do like them.

Some cameras do not have the LED lights.

I'd take some time and review those posts.

Look for @SouthernYankee 's welcome message to new folks here, he has a good list of models to look at.

Judging by what they've been reporting, I would also think the 4MP 1/1.8" sensor model Hikvision camera would also perform similarly.

ps - I'm not a big fan of the Annke / Sannce brand.. some of their products are not so great, and some of their products you have to update the firmware right away as the firmware is out of date and with known security holes...

My head is going to explode lol, them many cameras all with different features. Right I need to be able to identify someone from around 25m away on the other side of the road, in color at night. Lighting is pretty good on the street past my drive as you can see from the pic above. Is the ColorVu going to be capable of this with a 4mm lens? my plan would be to have 2 of those covering left and right of my drive and then a DS-2CD2385G1-I which is a 4mm Hikvision 8MP Darkfighter covering my drive, and also one for the back garden that is quite dark.

The only problem may be is my mounting position is under the guttering quite high up on the soffit at the front, could get them lower but would be difficult with wire runs.

Hi @torchwood

Requirements:
I need to be able to identify someone from around 25m away on the other side of the road, in color at night.

Those are some challenging specs. You're not going to find many kits which have cameras that can perform to that level. The bulk of the kits I have seen include cameras that have very wide FOVs and thus shorter ID distances.

Look for the DORI info in the cliff notes, and take some time to review those before spending money on a product which will not perform.

hint: if it does not perform in the basic theory / calculations (*) it will certainly not perform in low light conditions.

( * - we like to use 100 ppf to help determine the "ID distance" - Dahua uses a lower ppf number and thus their DORI distances are longer )

On a real computer, You need to do some studying here Cliff Notes before throwing any more money at your setup. Typically an all in one kit will not have the cameras that you need.
For that distance to ID someone, your going to need something like this camera: Review-Dahua IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E AI Varifocal Bullet | IP Cam Talk

I highly suggest you return that kit while you can, then spend some time educating yourself on here with reviews, the wiki and the cliff notes. Otherwise you are just spinning your wheels and wasting money. I agree with Mat, Annke is not a good brand, stick with Dahua and Hikvision and our trusted vendor, all mentioned in the cliff notes.

I may have to lower my expectations, it dosn't have to be in a kit, I can buy the NVR, cables, cameras seperate. I just want a system that is going to perform ok with a max budget of £800.

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 8ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
15) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3
16) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List
