Dahua WIZMIND X SERIES

I received a HDBW7842E1-Z-X today sent from Ancotech in Hong Kong (to the UK). I'm perhaps not the usual customer as my interest is in streaming the wildlife in the garden here. I have got 20 cameras (all Dahua!) set up now, and was hoping this would be the perfect upgrade for the bird feeder camera.

A couple of first impressions - it's big and quite heavy, even for a dome! My standard PoE injector I use to test couldn't even give it the juice it needed either, so I had to use a more meaty DC transformer on the bench to test it.

The speaker on it lets out a continuous hiss which the microphones pick up (they're right next to it) and is obviously annoying and not solvable by turning the volume down in the settings. My remedy was a piece of duct tape!

The 4K/60fps is amazingly good and is the reason I bought the camera. I've been bewildered for a while that we've been able to shoot 4k/60fps from the devices in our pockets for years but IP cameras with that capability are only just coming out (or were extremely costly/only indoor devices). With wildlife capturing, it honestly adds another dimension having the higher frame rate.

Two disappointments - first the 'upgraded' web interface is less intuitive and more confusing than the previous iteration. It also constantly prompts me to install a plugin (on Chrome, on a Mac) but leads to a 404 not found when clicking the link.

Second - I knew this already when buying it but hoped perhaps the camera would permit it given I've seen it work in other Dahua cameras - whilst the camera can produce 5 streams, only one of them can be 60fps. That is problematic for me personally with the CPU required to bring that main stream into the software I use to stream, to mix it with other cameras. I wouldn't use 3 out of 5 streams the camera can produce, but having a 1080p/60fps option as a secondary stream would be so handy for me so there could be a standalone 4K/60fps stream and one lower resolution one I bring into the multi-stream mix. Alas, the sub streams only go up to 30fps, regardless of whether I set the main stream or others to much fewer fps. It's clearly been hard coded in. But given the amount of streams it can produce, I imagine it could do two 60fps ones if it wasn't limited by the firmware. So on my wish list for any future firmware upgrades would be the 'real' fps allowances which update when you change other settings.

Anyway I know it's a bit of a niche use for this device, but I've grown to love the Dahua range for the reliability. Most of the other cams I have are the classic 5231 (2MP, 60fps) now obsolete range which work so well.

Thought I'd throw my two cents in anyway. Whilst I'm not as CCTV-technically minded as a lot of you, I'd be happy to test anything for anyone interested in this model whilst it's sat on the bench here, with me crossing my fingers for a firmware update!

OK, I just ordered the IPC-HFW71242H-Z-X from Andy and it should arrive by the middle of next week. I have some preparation work to do ahead of time. It will be installed in my tree to replace the existing 5442E-ZE. At this time I will be relocating one of my license plate cameras from the eave of the house to this same tree. I will also apply camouflage tape to the camera. Here are a couple of pictures. I just noticed that you can see the license plate camera in this picture that I will be relocating to the tree. I will have to add another underground cable run out to the tree.

Great discussion. As a photographer, I'm somewhat familiar with the effect of aperture, shutter speed, and sensor size (and mega-pixels) on light gathering capability. Sensor technology also plays a role and it sounds like Wizmind X series is a step up in that department ... although not quite as light sensitive as the 1" Canon SPAD Sensor I mentioned earlier ;-)

So I was kinda surprised that (all else equal) going from from F/1.8 to F/1.2 (more than doubt the amount of light gathering) only resulted in a slight reduction in minimum illumination from 0.0007 to 0.0006lux?
For instance the new 5442H-ZHE's I bought seem to me to be clearly better at night in IR than previous 5442's and the specs indicate it

I agree with others that the minimum illumination spec can easily be manipulated and is to be used as a ballpark with a grain of salt, but the FStop is more a measured spec that i trust a bit more.

And also agree the minimum lux (as you pointed out well earlier) doesn't mean much without a shutter speed, etc. specification.

But I just found it confusing why within those same-family of Dahua cams, that there wasn't more of a difference ... unless the measuring methodology changed.

I'm also curious how much sensor technology improved between the "S" and X" series. The 5442H and 7442 are both F/1.2, 4MP 1/1.8" sensors ... so assuming the measuring methodology is the same, the difference in lux rating (0.0006 to 0.0005) reflects improvement in sensor technology (and maybe a little better post-processing).

That is exactly what I am thinking. Dahua seemed to stop making the "S" series even though the "X" series was not out yet. So maybe they are on to something. Normally I would go with 8MP with this setup, but Andy is only stocking the 12MP 2.7-12MM varifocal with the 1/1.7" sensor. So, maybe he got the "word" from Dahua??? Next month I will buy the 8MP 8-32MM varifocal with the 1/1.8" sensor. It will be interesting to see how the 12MP setup works with my system. My NVR can handle it, but I only have a 4K monitor. Now, I can lower it to the 8MP specs, and I will check both out and see how they play out with my system.

Edit: by the way if you look closely at the picture in my post #68 and at the right side of the base of the tree you can see the cable. At this point in time I only had one camera in the tree. Then I went to two and next week it will be 3 cameras.

Zoom Plays a role too in FStop
I’m not smart enough to know why, I assume it has to do with the Iris? But if you’ll notice on PTZs they give a min/max FStop. It deteriorates as you zoom, same with a VF camera. That’s partially why fixed lens cameras do better with light pickup than VFs in the same series
 
Great point ... and yes, I have noticed that on SOME camera's, they'll show the min/max FStop.
Wouldn't it be nice if all the vendors showed a common set of data with agreed upon measuring methodology so one can reasonably compare ...

WRT Zoom: As you increase the focal length, to maintain the same FStop, you have to increase the size of the iris/entrance pupil. I have a (Canon) 50mm F/1.8 lens ... it is a LOT LOT smaller/lighter than a 400mm F2.8.
 
Do you have a link or did you have to contact them? Can't find this model on Ancotech's website or their AliExpress store.
