I'm guessing that's because data in those blocks fails validation. That's a good sign, suggesting that the overwrite worked.
It has a 'magic number' and a checksum.

Now set up for a normal boot and hopefully the default configuration will be built in the flash blocks.

great thread.... i managed to connect via serial console to the camera... a presumably bricked DS-2CD2542FWD-IWS that won't show up in SADP and won't hit the hikvision TFTP even when direct connected...

PuTTY only shows me this gibberish... did I miswire the serial ? I followed all serial cable instructions (didn't solder, but taped to terminals... black to black, yellow to white, green to green) using a DTECH Prolific chipset based USB to serial adapter... via virtual box, win 8 on macbookpro with host passing thru serial...

any ideas?? is this camera officially dead since I can't see anything on com3? all settings as described... 115200 bps... etc.

It looks like you have GND and TX transposed.
That would certainly give gibberish.

And then match up TX on the USB convertor to RX on the camera, TX on the camera to RX on the convertor, GND to GND.

If your convertor follows the quite common colour coding, then :
GND Black
TX Green
RX White
But check what the seller may have shown on the product description.

Oh, and are the serial port settings defined within PuTTY, not the Windows Device Manager?

That's because davinci never gets to the 'initialised' status where it serves up HTTP or SADP responses.

The hundreds of fields normally in the database don't exist and so they get re-created and populated with default values.

The problem seems to be around here.
It's from this that the firmware builds the device capability table based on the devType.
But it's unable to, so davinci can't proceed.
But why there is an apparent inconsistency isn't obvious.

What's the origin of the problem in the camera? Did you acquire it 'bricked'?
As a long shot - maybe try installing an earlier version if the 5.5.x firmware.
Unfortunately, the 'downgrade block' will not allow the 5.4.x

the camera literally just stopped working one day (it was in active use) and I could not find it again via SADP. It was purchased hikvision sealed new (not whitelabel/OEM).

I will try the last firmware ... if that doesn't work... to eBay it goes for parts! thanks!

Looks like it won't let me downgrade any minor versions below the current minor version (5.5). I tried all 5.4 versions up to 5.5.0 (previously installed the latest 5.5.82 build successfully) but no dice.

Seems like the DSP error I see is common (re: Hikvision DS-2CD2185FWD-IS won't boot up after firmware update) and it looks to be hardware related, meaning this thing is likely going into the trash bin (I mean... electronic waste recycling) or to eBay for parts.

Any parting thoughts from anyone? Thanks again for getting me this far... this will be useful to troubleshoot other cameras in the future as needed.

Just wanted to drop a note of thanks for @moped for all the information shared here. With it I was able to ubrick an RCA HSDB2A doorbell camera, which is one of several brand-clones of Hikvision doorbell hardware. There is a massive thread on these doorbells, and over time there have been some unrecoverable bricked doorbells. Some people have had luck with loading new firmware from sdcard (digicap.dav) but my situation turned out to be a config error which could not be worked around using the buttons on the camera.

I ended up soldering wires to the 4-pin TTL header on the camera (due to the doorbell form factor, they didn't inclue a JST-ZH connector, just bare pin pads), and once I got connected, I was able to format the flash then update the firmware from sdcard.

What's the NVR model, and what problem are you having with it?

If it has an RS232 DB9 connector on the back panel, you'll need a USB to RS232 (not serial TTL) convertor and a null modem cable to connect it.

I install the latest firmware (NVR_K51_BL_ML_STD_V4.40.015_200616) this worked without problems for 2 days, on the third day Nvr disappeared from the map, I have tried TFTP (ip-192.0.0.128 etc... without any result, my NVR was on firmware 3.4.92 before doing the update (All US Version).
The NVR turns on but is not detected by the SADP tool, ethernet ports light up quickly on power-up for a second, I don't get any sound alerts (Beep).
i just got the wire today (RS232 to USB) my NVR has that port on the back and I don't know if I can get it back from there? or if I need something else?

But I can't make a connection with the NVR through Putty
COM Port identified, drivers installed etc
trying now from a laptop, same result (tried first from a desktop) All Win 10 Pro, yesterday at some point I could get a connection with putty once doing tests but now after 80 attempts trying to follow your selfless help I have not been able to get a connection.

Nothing is connected to my pc like extra usb, usb stick or some other device that can interfere, If I have to stay up late again today, I will.

Yes but it's not working for me, I order a new cable Null Modem from Amazon with next day delivery.
tomorrow Sunday I will continue this project when I receive the new cable/adapter and I will let you know results.

It does look like you have the correct items.

As a test of the PuTTY configuration, connect the USB convertor to the null model cable and at the female end of the cable, the end that you would connect to the NVR, use a small piece of wire, or a paper clip or similar to join pin 2 to pin 3.
Then see what happens on the PuTTY window when you type some characters at the PC.

Do you have a link to where USB convertor and the null modem cable were purchased?
