Hikvision's new 4MP 2-series

That's quite a bit of image cut off, can make a huge difference. Looks good though, I can't wait for my 4mp dahua

ah, I was looking at "FWD" thinking that W was the wifi, but it's the second "W" int he -ISW :)

This week I got delivered a 2542 and a 4526 from two different sellers in China. Both work great but the 4526 makes the 2542 look like a toy and the nigh vision on the 2542 is a joke in comparison, regardless of settings.

I was really hoping the difference was going to be smaller but now I feel like the 4526 is easily worth double the price of the 2542 and will be ordering a few more. I paid just shy of $200 for the 2542 and just shy of $400 for the 4526, both including tracked DHL delivery (2-3 days) to the UK.

If video quality under low-light conditions is important to you, I'd recommend having at least one, in the most critical position, to complement the 2-series 4MP cams.

Did you blindly order without reading specs? 30 feet vs 130 feet of night coverage should've given a clue... The 25x2 series has the worst IR coverage out of all Hikvision cams in my experience and they also dim over time, but it's compact size is what makes up for it. Instead of getting a camera more then 2x the price with more IRs (which will dim eventually) you can "fix" this by getting external IR source for around $15.

I was mainly referring to Day mode at night. I don't care that much for Night mode and that deer-in-the-IR lights look. Nevertheless the 2542 is very noisy and grainy even in BW with IR, more so than my 2942 too. The 'true' WDR doesn't seem to do much of a difference either, besides raising the mosquito noise even more.

Higher resolution is great but seems that sensor size counts for more still.

bummer, I have 2532 and was thinking upgrading to 2542 hoping that 0.01 sensitivity improvement over 0.19 on 2532 will reduce noise. Perhaps 2MP version 2522 will be better due to larger sensor size.

2542WD-I ? Mine looks ok but I haven't mounted it yet. I normally only recommend the 25xx range when you absolutely have to use it.... i.e. in a porch.

4526 is going to be much much better. Completely different sensor and isn't a "porch" camera either.

If the weather is good then I'll get some comparison photos/vids up.

I only have one 2532 which was used as porch cam for the past couple of years, it's fine, but not great because I don't have the full view I want. I am thinking I will try that fish eye cam.

I noticed that the 4MP is 16:9 by default, hence, less vertical field of view (it doesn't show the drain on the middle-bottom part). Is there a way to enable a 4:3 resolution on it to get back more vertical real estate on the field of view?

As far as I know, no.

You're comparing a 2MP Darkfighter with 0.002 Lux with a 4MP entry-level camera with 0.01 Lux. That's comparing apples to oranges.

If you need resolution/detail, the 4MP is king. If you need night coverage with lower resolution, the Darkfighter series can't be beat.

Can you post some comparison pictures?

P.S.
I also noticed that in the turrent version, the 2MP has a larger sensor than the 4MP (i.e. 1/2.8" vs 1.3.0" respectively). Also, based on the specs, the 2MP has an option to be run at 1280 x 960 or a 4:3 aspect ratio. Interesting.

You dont lose much vertical resolution with the 4mp..its 1520 vs 1536 on the 3mp....if you notice in Duchies great comparison pics, while you lose the drain you see more of the vertical view of the houses....the 4mp adds more horizontal fov...

Got my turret and mini dome, they dont work with my hikvision nvr for some reason even though the nvr says it handles 5mp. Works fine on the computer.

Can you please post comparison snapshots for day/night. I'd like to get one of those, but not sure yet.

Yes, the resolution difference is negligible. However, the vertical field of view lost is quite substantial.

Even if you pan down a bit on the 4MP to be in level with the "skyline" of the 3.2MP, you still lose a fair amount of vertical field of view. The drain will be visible but the lower portion below the drain will still not be in view.
