Hello everyone,

I need some help and thought I could some pointers here on this forum.

I realize that I have a good working system that the hardware has to be selected to deliver the results.

The system is for a motel, we have currently 9 2mp analog cameras
and it’s time to add in more, go ip and look for a lpr option.

I’m looking to stay in budget and am okay to stay with 4mp however would like a nvr with 32 channel recording.

would like dome varifocal cameras in most areas,4 bullets and one lpr camera.

For the lpr capture of license plates, are these saved in the nvr interface in a particular area such as how playback can be pulled up and viewed? Does the viewing of license plates require nvr log in only or can app be used?

would greatly appreciate advice on which Brand to maybe look at to cover what I’m looking at or if someone has set up a similar setup - do share!

Thank you !

Welcome @Ipcamncvr

Do you have good quality cables for the coax / analog / bnc cameras - if so you may want to replace them with newer better coax bnc analog cameras.

How old are the 2mo cameras? Do you know the model of the cameras?

I prefer to have cat5 or cat 6 ran to fully upgrade and be future proof this way?

we need to run wiring to the new locations and thought let’s look into doing this new upgrade all ip with an nvr

the 2mp are some China eyeball dome

where would you suggest to start?

I’ve looked at some of the dahua eBay kits and they look like it could work out. But I don’t like that firmware can’t be updated on the cameras on some kits.

we primarily use the recorders app for all out use including downloading clips foe which I like the Hikvision since the app seems to work and has a lot of 4-5 start reviews.

all suggestions would help!

Thanks

Yes there is a bulk of information!

This is the best encyclopedia of it all.

I was hoping to maybe get some pointers from those who know what's the best approach or right products to be looking. It's for a Commerical setup and we are looking to add in more cameras.

Definitely there is a lot of information just would like to know if there are any people on this forum that enjoy piecing together a system within some of what of budget

:welcome:

There is a sub forum on LPR.
For everything but the LPR I would use 4MP Dahua starlight %442 cameras.
Start with on variable focus camera to verify lens, cameras locations. Use a test mount. Test at night with motion, have a person wear a hoody and ball cap, looking down , if the ID will will not work for the cops, you have the wrong location and camera.

Read study plan before spending money.

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Read Study Plan before spending money
Cameras are for surveillance to get information for after the fact.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) Start with a good variable focus camera, so you test for the correct lens, lighting, camera placement.
4) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
5) Do not use wifi cameras.
6) Do not use cloud storage
7) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
8) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
9) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
10) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
11) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
12) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
13) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
14) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 7ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
15) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
16) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3
17) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List
18) Camera Sensor size, bigger is general better Sensor Size Chart
19) Camera lens size, a bigger number give more range but less field of view. Which Security Camera Lens Size Should I Buy?
20) verify your camera placement, have a friend wearing a hoodie, ball cap and sunglasses looking down approach the house, can you identify them at night ?
21) DO NOT UPGRADE your NVR or camera unless you absolutely have a problem that needs to be fixed and known what you are doing, if you do you will turn it into a brick !!

if you are interested in International Dahua cameras, a forum member sells dahua (and some Hikvision) and ships world wide. You can read some of the members recommendations on his service. He also provides cameras to other forum member for evaluation and reviews.
You can email him for a quote, or purchase from his Aliexpress store or his Amazon store. The cameras are fully upgradable, he posts upgrade software when available.

Current supply may be limited do to the Covid-19. Do to Covid-19 shipping has also gotten slow. I recommend email andy

Hi All,

I have penciled out a setup after spending weeks researching an would like to get opinions to see if I’m potentially missing out of value or added features from what I have come up with.

I’m thinking to stick with as much of the newer stuff so that I can have the ai features as well as to being able to update firmware for a few years
