Dahua Starlight Recessed Dome PTZ (SD52C225U-HNI)

True.. just pondering if the 340$ ptz is worthwile above the 170$ fixed version... (as security cam that is) still confused.

fixed cameras can look at one spot all day and night, PTZs can look everywhere, you can control them, but they can also moved with presets that are triggered by all sorts of things, its a pretty huge difference. Do you want to just stare at one spot all day, or look at various things?

I see that the SD59225U-HNI has the same 4.8mm~120mm focal length as this recessed dome, so i can mount the SD59 at the front of the house and see if the view would be 'enough' for me. The focal length of the IPC-HDW5231R-Z is 2.7mm~12mm; so based on this test i will make my choice.

What FOV (angle of view?) does 4.8mm equate to?
I found an on-line lens calculator but it shows 4.8mm equiv to only a 41 deg angle FOV which did not sound right (unexpectedly narrow) to me.

Its all on the product page and spec sheets, no need to calculate anything

H: 59.2° ~ 2.4°

One other question - what is the 'starlight' function of the camera? Or is it just a brand name?

I would not recommend it

This camera will NOT be used outdoors. I need the STARLIGHT capabilities of this camera for a covert camera system.

the fan in this makes enough noise this would not make a good covert camera; why not just use a fixed camera

I need PTZ capabilities, fan noise will not be an issue and I won't use the dome. I'll reverse controls at the recorder side.

Thanks

Right now the verdict is this camera has several big bugs that make it hard for me to recommend; should all be addressable w/firmware fixes though.. was hoping I'd find something to resolve em by now but this is what I get for being the very first person to get a camera thats not horribly popular.

keep hope alive man lol.

its far better than the mini-ptz it replaced, I think its actually smaller.. its a ton faster, I love the alarm inputs.. even without IR its giving me alot better images both day and night (I desperately needed WDR in this location) and I never find my self in want of more zoom, where I was running the 4x zoom on the Mini @ MAX almost always.

Autotracking goes stupid every once and a while, but luckilly the alarm IO takes precedence and someone opening a door, ringing the doorbell or stepping on my pressure mat will force it to the wide preset regardless where it was looking before.. without this I'd probably disable autotracking.. Right now the biggest issue w/autotracking is it wont always land back on the preset, it dont loose it.. it just gets to like 98% there and stops, if you press it again it'll move the last bit and go right back where it should be.. but because its not landing on the preset, its not activating the IVS rules for that preset, and thus when it tries to go back to normal after an activity it can get stuck and wont do any more smart tracking until something moves it again.. I'm hoping a PTZ Firmware fixes this problem, it knows its not at the right spot by evidence that the IVS rules wont activate.

Its not flagging anything on my NVR when IVS is triggered, it does for the alarm IO but not IVS.. so thats making it a PITA to go through and see how well or poorly the tuning is on tracking and scrubbing activity for something that happened at night I have to do on other cameras.

When I get a firmware that fixes those issues; this camera will be pretty much perfect for what I wanted out of it.

Hmm...I was intending to order one of these. Not sure if poor AT is a show-stopper, but I would like to have it.

Is it possible with some external automation to have it go to a preset after some delay? Maybe 60s after last IVS?
Haven't looked into what it would take to register for IVS notifications, but I've seen the web page do it so I know it's possible.
It's not a fool-proof solution, but if it works it'd get the camera back into an intelligent mode instead of being a zombie.
