Hi Folks :)

Actually I bought a house and found i.e. 2 foscam cameras (FI9803P V3) and a Foscam NVR (FN3104H). Well... it works. Kinda. During day image quality is acceptable, however both cameras could have a wider field of view. During night... ugh, not good. Something is visible but it could be much better. It should be much better!

I bought a HikVision DS-2CV1021G0-IDW1, seller claimed it supports ONVIF and has www access. So I'm not sure about ONVIF (cannot enable it, as...) but there is definately no www access. As no ONVIF is present I cannot even to try to connect it to my Foscam NVR. However! I'm quite pleased with image quality, especially during night. IR LEDs are great, sure maybe it could have 3, 4 maybe 5MPix and more datil but still, it looks good. Field of view is also great.

So what's next?

I effectively need 5 to 6 cameras (maaaaybe 2 internal, but let's skip it for now), probably bullets (will think about what to put next to my front door, but that's a different topic) and a NVR (probably?). So questions, questions:

1. Which company I should buy equipment from? In reality here where I live there are 3 companies that are easily accessible: Foscam, HikVision and Dahua, didn't see Blue Iris at all.
2. Will HikVision DS-2CV1021G0-IDW1 work with any of NVRs as (it does not support ONVIF)? HikVision NVRs maybe? Yes, that would also point to HikVision as a company of choice. Or maybe I should just return it?
3. How many Mpix IPCs I should be intetrested with? Stay with 2? WIll I see any differece in case of 5 or 8Mpix? I don't think I interested in recording in anything above 1920x1080.
4. Should I buy new NVR (well, I really like that graph with time on Foscam and easy of use)? I don't think I need another PC but NVR I can stuck somewhere. And having all the recordings locally is great, I cannot imagine logging to every camera separately.
5. WiFi works fine for me, house is not big, network coverage due do multiple AP is great, Foscam IPSs confirm that. In the worst case I am able to install cables everywhere, but that will require additional work.

Please help me out. It's rather hard to get some advice on what to buy, what are the differences between models and what I do really need. It seems my test with this budget HikVision was an excellent choice but now I don't know what to do with it's outcome ;-)

Cheers!

Welcome @Adak

I see you've got a lot of questions still. Do remember to check the cliff notes and the various reviews members are sharing with cameras.

In general avoid WiFi and go wired IP PoE cameras.

Decide what you functionally need the cameras to do first, i.e. watch to see if someone breaks into my car parked next to my house...

Saw cliff notes, but it screams very loud: "buy Dahua!" so I wanted to ask...
Is it a good idea? Is it really better than competitors in the same price range?
I see zero opinions about the rest :/

Hi @Adak

Dahua OEM international models which did well with low light conditions were available first to us at a reasonable price and thus the cliff notes have a lot more info on those models.

Since then Hikvision also has the darkfighter line out - so you can pick which you like.

We do have a good vendor for Dahua OEM international models here ( empiretecandy ) as well as numerous reviews to check out from members.

Take sometime to review the newer models which have come out since we did the cliff notes. ( the models listed in the cliff notes now are "older models" - even if still good ones )

:welcome:

If the NVR and cameras are from the same manufacture, not a problem. If using Blue Iris not a problem as it currently supports the cameras.

WIFI is not recommended. Calculate the network load for your cameras.

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 7ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
15) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3
16) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List
17) Camera Sensor size, bigger is general better Sensor Size Chart

if you are interested in International Dahua cameras, a forum member sells dahua (and some Hikvision) and ships world wide. You can read some of the members recommendations on his service. He also provides cameras to other forum member for evaluation and reviews.
You can email him for a quote, or purchase from his Aliexpress store or his Amazon store. The cameras are fully upgradable, he posts upgrade software when available.

Current supply may be limited do to the Corvid-19
