Pandemic threat? Anyone else concerned?

Markets just froze... circuit breaker.. happens when the markets drop 7% ... Corona and Oil... absolutely crazy...

Nobody can tell the future and it would be hard to say for sure when to buy in as this bottoms out. But if history is any indicator the COVID-19 virus will run its course and will subside. But this one is looking like, in this modern world, of having far reaching impact as it runs its course. So definitely a far reaching global recession of some sort as big events and other group events shut down, Travel, Shopping and Eating out, Concerts and Sporting Events, Vacations, Etc. take a hit.

But for a long term investor as long as America remains capitalistic we are very likely entering a good time to enter the market with the long term in mind.

Just super sad the loss many families will encounter as this runs its course around the world. I have a customer who owns a business in southern China and he told me that he heard from an acquaintance telling him that entire elderly families were lost.

In all seriousness, how do you market players shuffle funds around to buy, buy, buy in a case like this? If I have funds in a 401k, is there any easy way to get those and buy without getting penalties? Or are those funds basically off limits (meaning without penalty) until I am old enough to retire?

@OICU2...If your not of retirement age the only way to access your 401k funds is to (1) withdraw them and take the 10%? penalty (+ pay applicable income tax on the withdrawn amount) or borrow against your 401k plan. When I say that I "moved $25k into the market" I mean to say that I moved $25,000 from a (safe) government bond fund into a stock market indexed fund such as Vanguard S&P 500 which I did using my 401k provider's web interface fund management utility.

Headline: China prepares to declare VICTORY over Coronavirus outbreak as Pres. Xi visits quarantined residents in Wuhan. City closes all 14 makeshift hospitals

Story:
Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited Wuhan for the first time since the city emerged as the centre of the coronavirus epidemic in January - a major sign that Beijing believes the outbreak is under control.

The timing of Xi's visit indicates that China is ready to declare victory over the health crisis, which has killed at least 3,136 people in the nation and 4,062 worldwide, according to experts.

Xi today inspected a 1,000-bed hospital constructed in 10 days to fight the deadly disease before touring a local community to call on residents in quarantine.

His visit came as Wuhan authorities have closed all of the city's 14 makeshift 'fang cang' hospitals - which were converted from sports halls and exhibition centres - after they treated some 12,000 patients.

It also came as unprecedented quarantine measures that have sealed off the city of 11 million and the rest of central Hubei province since late January appear to have paid off, with new infections dropping dramatically in recent weeks.

China's progress stands in stark contrast with the growing global crisis, with cases now growing at a faster pace abroad, and Italy enacting its nationwide lockdown.

More than 100 countries are now fighting the contagion, which has infected over 114,400 people globally.

A video released by China's state broadcaster CCTV shows Xi, who arrived by plane in Hubei's capital, wearing a mask as he spoke via video-link to front-line medical workers and patients in Huoshenshan or Fire God Mountain Hospital.

Huoshenshan started treating patients from February 4 after being built from the ground in just 10 days to combat the fast-spreading infection.

Its sister facility, Leishenshan or Thunder God Mountain Hospital, was completed in 12 days.

Xi then went to Wuhan's Donghu New City community at noon to visit people in quarantine

Indeed agree with that assessment with regards to the Corona Virus ( tags Sars-cov-2 / COVID-19 wuhan virus )

However, the oil war - which I'm reading about now, looks to really add fuel to the fire so to speak. ( actually very interesting from a geo-political aspect as well as macro-economic aspect. )

There's a LOT more risk setup in the USA and other economies which people are not aware of.

Terms like bonds, junk bonds, leverage, margin, petro dollars, shale oil, insurance, repo market, deflation, .. negative interest rates, collateral, pension funds,... it all gets very interesting and significantly beyond what most normal people ever consider or even hear of on the news.

Right now the various governments are scrambling to keep the global economy from getting swamped and sinking.

What will this mean to each of us as a tax payer? - lots of bailouts.

"May you live in interesting times" ... lots of risks and opportunities now.

Ah.. yes, the Chinese Government spin on this.. "look at our victory for finally putting out the fire which started in our house due to our incompetence.. we did so much better than all of those Western Democracies whose houses are now on fire.. "

No, we have the Chinese Communist Party and authoritarian nature to thank for this fire which has now spread throughout the world.

Hi @OICU2

Look at setting up a Roth IRA if you can.
Look to set up a self directed one - like in a trading account - this way you can move money to different assets as you wish.

Max the contributions.
If you have a traditional IRA - try to see if you can convert it to a Roth IRA.

Roth IRA = upfront money is taxed.. gains are not.

Usually you have a choice of 15-25 funds within your 401k you can move money around in. Yes some have restrictions and fees, but many are not bad if you don’t move in and out of a fund in day 90 days or x amount of moves in a time period. Each fund will tell you the penalty if any. No you generally don’t want to take money out of a 401k to play the markets and generally can’t without substantial penalties.

I don’t move 401k money often, 1x or maybe 2x per year. Most people rarely if ever, but if you’re not watching, you can get hurt like many did in 2008/2009. The closer I get to 65 the closer I watch and the more conservative I get.

My actual individual stock trading/picking is done in a Roth IRA. This type allows access to the full market of stocks, funds, ETFs etc. But again like above, at 61 I’m more cautious and conservative than I was 20 years ago.

I have a certain amount in it that I use to “play” individual stocks. This can be used for day/week/monthly trades. Money that while it would hurt to lose it, but not substantially change my retirement. The rest is usually in the same vehicles as much of my 401k, SPX index or target date indexes such as the 2030 Vanguard fund.

You can also just open a regular brokerage account, online easily, with TD Ameritrade or others and take your chances in the casino that way. Most are in the process of or have already done away with trading fees.

Also... remember to pay attention as some brokerage accounts have had recent failures.. Robin Hood for example.

Chinese communist party is upset that people are giving credit where credit is due for the SARS-COV-2 / COVID-19 / Wuhan virus.

Q: During a press interview on March 6, US Secretary of State Pompeo called the novel coronavirus "the Wuhan coronavirus". I wonder if you could comment on that?
A: Despite the fact that the WHO has officially named this novel type of coronavirus, certain American politician, disrespecting science and the WHO decision, jumped at the first chance to stigmatize China and Wuhan with it. We condemn this despicable practice.

I know the solution.. let's call it the "Chinese Communist Party Virus of 2019" - or CCP-virus-19

I'm confused as to why it would be labeled as racist to name something after its origin. Everything is racist these days, isn't it?

Identity politics. Keep the peeps fighting among themselves so they remain distracted and don't realize their own power to challenge those that rule them. Happens everywhere. We used to be smart enough to see through it and call it out for what it is. But it today's PC culture, everyone is a victim. Everyone deserves special consideration and treatment. And while we play these stupid games, Rome burns.... literally.

Is Chinese even a race? I would've thought it was a nationality. I thought Asian was a race. I could be wrong.

I think they should get minimum wage....right after they start paying for housing, food and the cost of guarding them while they're incarcerated. Funny how people who've thumbed their nose at the rules of society seem to deserve special treatment by the society they've violated.

Holy Hell in a handbasket!

Crazy, just crazy. Heard an announcement that Oil hit $27 a barrel...

This should come as no surprise to you if you have resided in NY State for any amount of time, another reason people are leaving the state in masses and heading to other states.

It's alleged discrimination. You pick the category. Someone is always offended for an immutable characteristic. Everyone cries foul. Everyone is a victim (except for the old white old, of course - he's not even allowed to say "it's ok to be white").

Lombardy fatality rate is now north of 8%...

Thank you: that tweet led me to epidemiologist Silvia Stringhini's twitter feed...

The Twitter stream of Italian epidemiologist Silvia Stringhini:

Silvia Stringhini
@silviast9
Silvia Stringhini - Institut de santé globale - UNIGE

I believe this to be real...and here is what Dr. Stringhini tweeted...

03/09/20 | 1/ I may be repeating myself, but I want to fight this sense of security that I see outside of the epicenters, as if nothing was going to happen "here". The media in Europe are reassuring, politicians are reassuring, while there's little to be reassured of. #COVID19 #coronavirus

03/09/20 | 2/ This is the English translation of a post of another ICU physician in Bergamo, Dr. Daniele Macchini. Read until the end "After much thought about whether and what to write about what is happening to us, I felt that silence was not responsible.

03/09/20 | 3/ I will therefore try to convey to people far from our reality what we are living in Bergamo in these days of Covid-19 pandemic. I understand the need not to create panic, but when the message of the dangerousness of what is happening does not reach people I shudder.

03/09/20 | 4/ I myself watched with some amazement the reorganization of the entire hospital in the past week, when our current enemy was still in the shadows: the wards slowly "emptied", elective activities were interrupted, intensive care were freed up to create as many beds as possible.

03/09/20 | 5/ All this rapid transformation brought an atmosphere of silence and surreal emptiness to the corridors of the hospital that we did not yet understand, waiting for a war that was yet to begin and that many (including me) were not so sure would ever come with such ferocity.

03/09/20 | 6/ I still remember my night call a week ago when I was waiting for the results of a swab. When I think about it, my anxiety over one possible case seems almost ridiculous and unjustified, now that I've seen what's happening. Well, the situation now is dramatic to say the least.

03/09/20 | 7/ The war has literally exploded and battles are uninterrupted day and night. But now that need for beds has arrived in all its drama. One after the other the departments that had been emptied fill up at an impressive pace.

03/09/20 | 8/ The boards with the names of the patients, of different colours depending on the operating unit, are now all red and instead of surgery you see the diagnosis, which is always the damned same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia.

03/09/20 | 9/ Now, explain to me which flu virus causes such a rapid drama. [post continues comparing covid19 to flu, link below]. And while there are still people who boast of not being afraid by ignoring directions, protesting because their normal routine is"temporarily" put in crisis,

03/09/20 | 10/ the epidemiological disaster is taking place. And there are no more surgeons, urologists, orthopedists, we are only doctors who suddenly become part of a single team to face this tsunami that has overwhelmed us.

03/09/20 | 11/ Cases are multiplying, we arrive at a rate of 15-20 admissions per day all for the same reason. The results of the swabs now come one after the other: positive, positive, positive. Suddenly the E.R. is collapsing.

03/09/20 | 12/ Reasons for the access always the same: fever and breathing difficulties, fever and cough, respiratory failure. Radiology reports always the same: bilateral interstitial pneumonia, bilateral interstitial pneumonia, bilateral interstitial pneumonia. All to be hospitalized.

03/09/20 | 13/ Someone already to be intubated and go to intensive care. For others it's too late... Every ventilator becomes like gold: those in operating theatres that have now suspended their non-urgent activity become intensive care places that did not exist before.

03/09/20 | 14/ The staff is exhausted. I saw the tiredness on faces that didn't know what it was despite the already exhausting workloads they had. I saw a solidarity of all of us, who never failed to go to our internist colleagues to ask "what can I do for you now?"

03/06/20 | 15/ Doctors who move beds and transfer patients, who administer therapies instead of nurses. Nurses with tears in their eyes because we can't save everyone, and the vital parameters of several patients at the same time reveal an already marked destiny.

03/09/20 | 16/ There are no more shifts, no more hours. Social life is suspended for us. We no longer see our families for fear of infecting them. Some of us have already become infected despite the protocols.

03/09/20 | 17/ Some of our colleagues who are infected also have infected relatives and some of their relatives are already struggling between life and death. So be patient, you can't go to the theatre, museums or the gym. Try to have pity on the myriad of old people you could exterminate.

03/09/20 | 18/ We just try to make ourselves useful. You should do the same: we influence the life and death of a few dozen people. You with yours, many more. Please share this message. We must spread the word to prevent what is happening here from happening all over Italy."

03/09/20 | 20/ I finish by saying that I really don't understand this war on panic. The only reason I see is mask shortages, but there's no mask on sale anymore. We don't have a lot of studies, but is it panic really worse than neglect and carelessness during an epidemic of this sort?
