But the reality is that on any given year there are hundreds of millions of flu cases and half a million deaths. This Coronavirus is unlikely to reach this scale.
Yep. My brother and I were a bit out of commission on Saturday due to getting the flu (at least we hope SARS-CoV-2 hasn't made it to Wyoming yet). The symptoms are pretty similar so you never know how many cases will be misdiagnosed, professionally or otherwise. (we haven't been to the doctor)

Great point.

One note for people thinking they may have influenza: go to a minute clinic or the like right away. They have decent tests that only take minutes, and if you get diagnosed early, the antivirals REALLY do help.

About two years ago I caught influenza A at a sales meeting --it spread like wildfire there-- and came home infected; first symptoms 48 hours later. Went straight to the clinic, diagnosed, on Tamiflu. My symptoms were super mild and dissipated quickly compared to several colleagues that toughed it out. My while family got it from me, all went on the drugs right away and it passed quickly.

...due to getting the flu... The symptoms are pretty similar...
Thus, the problem. Health care system over-load. Diligence and common sense is a MUST for everyone. Stay home if you can. If you have them, wear a mask when feeling ill.

"Hopefully" and "it's not here yet" attitudes will be the start of our downfall and will become "too little, too late".

With today's report, this is now game day. Good luck to us all and thank you for the insight Andy!

Thanks Andy for your report. Hopefully the worst has passed in China. For that matter other places too.

Dr. John Campbell covers some good Q and A

  • Cash, ATMs, self-service checkouts, ticket machines, etc..
  • Public Buttons
  • Public Toilets
  • Are there any medicines I can get to keep at home
  • Are facemasks helpful?

Self-isolation at home:
  • No visitors
  • shopping left on doorstep
  • double bag waste
  • stay in own room, door shut, windows open
  • do not share utensils
  • hygiene in the bathroom ( will be a major issue if only one bathroom that is shared.. )
  • infected person must take exceptional personal hygiene ( cough sneeze.. )
  • own towels
  • plenty of fluids for the ill..

Potential political fallout is already coming in the USA on this...

"U.S. workers without protective gear assisted coronavirus evacuees, HHS whistleblower says"

"Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services sent more than a dozen workers to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, without proper training for infection control or appropriate protective gear, according to a whistleblower complaint.

The workers did not show symptoms of infection and were not tested for the virus, according to lawyers for the whistleblower, who is a senior HHS official based in Washington who oversees workers at the Administration for Children and Families, a unit within HHS.

The whistleblower is seeking federal protection because she alleges she was unfairly and improperly reassigned after raising concerns about the safety of these workers to HHS officials, including those within the office of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. She was told Feb. 19 that if she does not accept the new position in 15 days, which is March 5, she would be terminated.

Headline: AP Confirms: Democrats Are Lying to the Public About Coronavirus

Story: An Associated Press fact check confirms what Breitbart News reported earlier this week: that Democrat presidential candidates are falsely claiming that President Donald Trump cut funding and personnel needed to fight coronavirus.

On Tuesday, Breitbart News fact-checked “mostly false” claims by former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg during the Democrat debate in South Carolina. Bloomberg claimed that Trump had “fired” a pandemic specialist at the White House, and “defunded” the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The implication: Trump was to blame for the spread of coronavirus — even though there have been just over a dozen cases and no fatalities in the U.S.

The truth: the pandemic specialist had left voluntarily during a reorganization of the bloated National Security Council (NSC), and the CDC cuts — as the agency wound down its Ebola response — were only proposed, not enacted.

The AP confirmed Thursday, in an article titled “AP FACT CHECK: Democrats distort coronavirus readiness,” that much of what Democrats are saying about Trump’s response to the coronavirus challenge is simply not true:

Democratic presidential contenders are describing the federal infectious-disease bureaucracy as rudderless and ill-prepared for the coronavirus threat because of budget cuts and ham-handed leadership by President Donald Trump. That’s a distorted picture. For starters, Trump hasn’t succeeded in cutting the budget.

He’s proposed cuts but Congress ignored him and increased financing instead. The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren’t suffering from budget cuts that never took effect.

@EMPIRETECANDY would never sell fake N95 masks!

View attachment 56244
aha, i will not sell them, because right now China also big lacking of them. Normal people no need to wear the N95, just normal sugical mask is fine. Wash hands frequency, keep ventilation and better not go to busy places. If have to, wear masks. Most place in US are not such crowd as Asian countries, i don't think US will have big spreading. US stock market increased too much in the past years, right now down because people all want to keep their profit and sell ,sell ,sell. Will be a good chance for buying at lower price.
I watch the data of the virus every morning when i wake up, today the data drop again, and the death drop to 44,and only 329( Wuhan 313) new confrimed infection. So the rest of the China, only 6 new adding. China has very strong policy to stop spreading, for example right now i go to SHANGHAI for a business trip, i have to stay at hotel for 1 week, can't go anywhere. If i am from wuhan, i have to stay at hotel for 2 weeks and can't go anywhere till meet this 14days isolation. So right now very seldome people travelling. Within a province(State)then no problem. I think next week China will reduce the control all based on the real situation.
When China back to normal, will produce billons of masks :headbang:

I have to admit, Andy, when I ready your posts, it does provide me with some hope that this may end sooner rather than later. I guess China will probably come out of this ahead of everyone else since they took it on the chin first.

Perhaps the test is faulty?
There's theories that this thing has already mutated. So maybe it's a different strain already? But from what I gathered this is just 1 confirmed instance? So I agree at this point. But I also haven't been comfortable with the 2 week quarentines. I believe it should be a minimum of 3 weeks, ideally a full month.

Very small part of them, the recovered patients still have to stay at home for 2 weeks and can't go anywhere, most of them are very light symptom, there has antibody in their body. This virus lastly will become a normal flu i think. When weather warmer, everything will be ok. Singapore right now have good control, it's a very small city with big crowd everywhere, the weather there is very hot. Thailand, Vietnam all no spreading.

Korea and Japan is bit cold, Korean guys still have a big Rally last week, make things worse very fast.
